Unfortunately, they are no longer with us so all we have is a few notes left to go on...not really enough to help. My fiance just wants to experience the places that his grandparents used to go to...

Ah, I see. Well, leave yourself plenty of time to poke around Positano then. And don't be shy about asking around if there are still people in town who might be related.

My opinion....Feel free to ask more specific questions...

3 nights will give you a great taste for Rome.
Get a flight that comes in early - and start exploring! This fills the historic stuff category. There is so much to see! Our typical itinerary for Rome was walking, walking and walking. We spent the day (up until around 4 or 5pm) walking around the city seeing the sights. In the afternoon we went back to our hotel for a nap and a shower. Then at night we would go out to dinner and an evening walk. The forum is especially gorgeous lit up at night.

On our forth day in Rome we caught an early train to Naples and from there a ferry to Capri. We were on Capri by noon. After going to our hotel (LA Minerva) we took an afternoon boat tour around the island (highly highly recommended). This trip included the Blue Grotto - not so great. But the boat trip was so beautiful looking up at the cliffs. Capri at night is gorgeous and glamorous. We were early to bed at midnight - the streets were still full! People dont go to dinner until 9-10pm!

Our second day in Capri we rented a moped (Also highly recommended). We were able to see the sights around the island (including the beautiful town of anacapri) and go to some more secluded swimming spots (marina piccolo).

The third day in Capri - the ferry for Positano did not leave until 2pm. So were hiked up to the top of the moutain to the ruined palace of one of the former emporers. The views of the Amalfi coast were amazing!!

Positano was beautiful. One day we spent half the day exploring Amalfi and the other half in Ravello. Another day we made a day trip to Pompeii, One day was spent exploring Positano and Priano - with plenty of swimming and a long lunch with wine!!. The bus trips from town to town were fabulous. The views were so incredible!

The last day we took the early ferry to Naples. We spent a little time exploring the major sites of Naples. Our last night was a plate of the best pizza weve ever had!

I am completely biased, but this was a fabulous time. Im so excited for you!

Sincer you mentioned food...I'm still dreaming about the eggplant parmiagana I had at the Murat restaurant in Positano. Great atmosphere, too -- outside dining in a garden with lots of candlelight. :)
