First time visitor going to Italy in March

Hi,

How is mid-March for a one week trip to Italy? I have read postings which seem to indicate that the weather is not too bad in both these places in March if one does'nt mind wearing a jacket. Any suggestions?
Thank you.

It depends. Last March was very cold and snowy in parts of Italy, especially north of Rome. I would suspect it will be better this year.

Where in Italy?

Like many places that time of year weather can be a bit unpredictable. You can check the extended forecast right before you leave to get a general idea (although these extended forecasts aren't the most reliable). You need to bring layers in any case, and also raingear. Back when I was there in March 01, it was damp and chilly in Venice, maybe 50s during the day and colder at night. In tuscany area, it was 70s and sunny, and in Rome it was over 80!

March is a good time to travel.

Thanks for your responses. The trip in March would mostly be to Venice and Rome. Although your responses and others' seem to indicate that Venice might be damp, it still sounds like something to not be missed...?

Yes, go to Venice. We were in Italy for the last 2 weeks in March last year, and originally had planned to skip Venice as my husband thought it would be just damp and drizzly. Well, we did include 4 nights in Venice, and loved it!! It never did rain, and the city is just beautiful and magical.

Venice is just fine in the fog! Just carry an umbrella. You mat be lucky, it may be springlike and sunny.

In terms of rain in March, Venice averages slightly less than either Florence or Rome.

Of course it sits in the middle of a lagoon so it is going to be damper overall.
