First Time Traveler

Hello there!

I am currently trying to plan a trip for June of this year. I've traveled several places in the U.S. and now I am looking to finally go overseas. I have a top 3 for choices:

1. Amsterdam/Ireland
2. Thailand
3. Greece

I have it planned for the 15th through the 30th as of right now. Would like to know other's thoughts on the destinations, and if they have any tips for someone who is traveling that way for the first time!

Thank you!

For your first time I would go with Amsterdam and Ireland. Not that I don't think you could handle the others, but with all the little things that one has to get used to when traveling abroad, I think Amsterdam and Ireland will be the smoothest experiences for this first overseas venture.

If you have not booked your flights yet, consider an "open-jaw" ticket (or two one-way tickets) - fly into Amsterdam and fly home from Dublin or Belfast (Icelandair flies cheaply from Belfast, see if it gets anywhere close to your hometown, or if you can reach one of its US hubs easily).

Shanna512,

Welcome to Fodor's. Your question is too open ended for us to give you the best advice. All those destinations might be great for you, but we could offer better guidance if you shared more about what you like to do on vacation . . . visit history museums? art galleries? dine at fine restaurants? simple restaurants? hike? swim? relax at a cafe? water sports? language classes? guided tours, yes or no? also share what drew you to narrow your choices to the three you listed. We'd love to help.

Hi! Thanks for the responses! I'm actually not a picky person! I love outdoor adventures as well as history. I like trying new foods and being able to experience as much as possible. Guided tours really aren't my thing, I like to experience things at my own pace but I'm not opposed to them! I'm currently doing a lot of training to be in shape for hiking, so I'd love to do that! I've always wanted to visit Ireland and Amsterdam both, my friends have visited and I've always heard great things. Thailand is because of all the outdoor adventures and it's a different experience. Greece simply because of the history and I've always dreamed of going from Athens to Mykonos to Santorini. I hope this helps!

Greece is very hot in June, but gets worse in July so you need to really like the heat.

I'd do the Ireland/Amsterdam trip, but then my oiled bronzed body is not a pretty sight.
