first time traveler

Hi, I will be traveling to Italy, Switzerland and Germany this summer with my two daughters. It is a first experience for me and I have been spending hours reading information and tips from all of you. Thanks! It has been both helpful and fun. I have now worked up the courage to ask for specific advice. We will be in Munich on June 23 for two nights. We have tentative reservations at the Hotel Uhland but we are unsure of its location. Would it be better to stay closer to the center of town? How about the Acanthus Hotel? I look forward to your replies. Jackie

Hi! we have been to Munich a few times. but I am unfamiliar with the hotels you mention, which in and of itself doesn't mean much. The center of Munich is Marienplatz and it really depends how comfortable you are using public transportation. I've always stayed around the victualmarkt or the Train Station. These are convenient to most tourist areas. Enjoy alan

Jackie,<BR><BR>Welcome to the Fodor's Europe forum. The Hotel Uhland has a website at<BR><BR>http://www.hotel-uhland.de/enwelcome.html<BR><BR>complete with a (too-zoomed-in, perhaps) map at <BR><BR>http://www.hotel-uhland.de/enuhlandlo.html<BR><BR>Additionally, they have a frequently asked questions (FAQ) page at <BR><BR>http://www.hotel-uhland.de/FAQ.html<BR><BR>with unusually detailed answers to questions about how to approach the hotel.<BR><BR>I personally think that this would be a very good location, though I have never personally seen the hotel. I have stayed at a couple different hotels in and around Munich. And the city is pleasant to get around by car.<BR><BR>If you knew this already, perhaps you simply needed a better map to orient you to Munich, generally (note that the map on the hotel Uhland site is turned "funny") - - N, S and W are self-evident "O" = Ost (east). I recommend www.mappy.com for a good online (zoomable) map of Munich (and many other cities in Europe).<BR><BR>I hope this helps you - - and I hope that you have a great trip to Germany.<BR><BR>Come back often and ask lots more questions as your trip plans evolve.<BR><BR>Best wishes,<BR><BR>Rex<BR>

I blew it again and shortchanged the URL. Try this; I think I've finally got the hang of this newfangled forum!<BR> http://www.fodors.com/forums/message...numresponses=9

Jackie, it's so easy to get around Munich by subway (U-Bahn or S-Bahn) that the Uhland's location should not be a problem at all... it's a very quick trip from the Theresienwiese to the Marienplatz, and you'll probably only want to go there once, anyway, although if you go through the Residenz, you can easily spend all day downtown. We stayed at the Acanthus in the fall and were very disappointed in the quality of the rooms, although the people there were very friendly and helpful. I'd stick with your reservations...
