I am traveling with a friend to Italy in may, we will be taking the train from florence to venice may 6. I am interested in any suggestions as to hotels for two nights. One hotel i am considering is Novecento, its in san marco, but it is 240uro per night. any suggestions or info would be appreciated

Hi Paul:
We went as a family of 5 to Venice last March and since the hotels in Venice were costly (we needed 2 rooms) and we needed to park our van, we stayed on the mainland in Mestre just across the street from the train station at HotelTritone (4 star) for about $100 US for each room including a great breakfast. We prepaid the reservation on gtahotels.com. Great staff and great location. 1 Euro train cost to Venice - 5 minutes. Hotel website is www.hoteltritonevenice.com.

Venice is small, so there is no need to be in San Marco area. There are many reasonably priced hotels. I suggest you look at www.tripadvisor.com. In the search box type in Venice hotels. The next page will ask you which Venice you want -- there are many, such as in California and Florida. Once on the correct page the hotels show average prices, are rated based on reviews from people who have stayed there. You can then read the reviews and search out the websites for the hotels that interest you.

I went last August and stayed at Casa Rezzonico -- v. cheap and only about a 10-15 walk to San Marco, and the rooms overlook a canal.

I don't know what the price is now but we loved the Hotel Antiche Figure when we went to Venice in 2005. If you check TripAdvisor, you'll see exceptional reviews and I can vouch for the fact that they're all true. It's also on TripAdvisor's 10 best list (in their Romantic Hotels category, I think).
