First Time to Scotland..St. Andrew's!
 

I used this site last year for a very successful trip to Italy....great advice that lead to a great itiniery. We are currently planning a trip to St. Andrew's in Scotland. This area chose us, as we had an offer from a former resident of St. Andrew's to rent her cottage in town. We are 3 couples with varied interests, hiking, sightseeing, shopping, and enjoying afternoons in a local pub. Any ideas on day trips, must sees, restaurants or pubs?

St Andrews/Fife is FULL of great things - many more than you'll have time for. A short list would include:

- St Andrews Castle

- St Andrews cathedral

- The Old Course. Even if you are not golfers go there on a Sunday. There is no play on Sundays and it becomes a wonderful public park

- the fishimg villages (Crail, Anstruther, Pittenweem)

- Boat trip to the Isle of May - amazing bird sanctuary and ruined light houses

- Falkland Palace/Gardens and a hike up the Lomond Hills above the village

- Glamis Castle (where the Queen Mother was born and a huge/interesting place

- Dollar Glen/Castle Campbell

- Culross

- Dinner at the Peat Inn (for a special occasion)

- Loch Leven castle

- day trip to Stirling and Doune

- Day trip to Edinburgh

That is just the short list :)

How long will you be there?

We will be in St. Andrew's for a week Saturday to Saturday with perhaps one or two days added on in Glasgow or Edinburgh...wherever we fly into. Thanks for the suggestions. I will be looking for that Word document..i'll contact you with e-mail address. Advice greatly appreciated!!

Glasgow is an industrial town - you could leave it out - Edinburgh is much better - must see is the castle there.
Side trip from St. Andrew's is Pitlochry it's on the way to the highlands - very quaint - visit the House of Bruar (a must see for shopping - they have a website).
in St. Andrew's there is a great pub on the corner of the street that the first tee is on at the Old Course and if you are into cashmere - great small shop about 100 yards to the right of the pub(same side).

I wouldn't FORCE you to visit Glasgow, but you shouldn't underestimate its charms.

We'd love to visit Skye or the Highlands but don't feel we have the time to do them justice...I much prefer to immerse myself in that one area and truly experience it all as I may not ever return to St. Andrew's. Attempting to book our airfare and Glasgow seems to have the better rates. I'll keep looking though.Thanks for he ideas
