Yes, people do eat at the restaurant bars in Italy. It might be cheaper, too, but then you'd be standing.

Have fun. People will not think twice about a solo traveler there. It's quite common. Rome is wonderful.

Hi, ctrican -

> a little bit nervous as I have never spent this much time by myself.

I routinely travel alone for 3 or more weeks at a time, and I love it! You'll have the freedom to do whatever you want, when you want!

> Are restaurants friendly to solo diners?

I didn't have any problems in Rome.

> I leave tomorrow and am excited

As you should be! Enjoy!!

If you do go to Ostica Antica for a half day be sure you go mid-day that you are not coming back on the train and metro during rush hour.

I posted our experience a couple of days ago. The train was so crowded and we waited through a couple of metros with no luck of getting on. So we decided to split up and if one could get on then we would meet up at Termini. At one stop someone tried to get on and everyone in our car started screaming that there was no more room. I don't understand Italian so it could have been something worse. gt;) Anyone we were packed in so tight you could hardly breath and getting off was an ordeal.

So be sure to head back to Rome at an early hour.

Hi Ctrican, You will be fine going solo. I just returned from a 3 week trip to Florence, Rome and the Amalfi Coast. I was with my brother and his lady friend for 5 days and the rest of the time alone. I had a great time and was never nervous or afraid. I am 78 years old ( I sometimes feel I should say young) I love to travel and when my husband died 3 years ago I decided to continue our tradition of going on at least 1 major trip each year. My advice is to stay in nice areas and do not be afraid to venture out going to concerts, dinner ,musems etc. by yourself. Hope this gives you some assurance that going solo is fine.
