First time to Munich—best area for lodging?
We have three full days and nights to spend in Munich, and are looking for advice on best areas/neighborhoods to stay. We will want to take in museums and historic sights, and love small pubs and friendly restaurants at night. We are hearty walkers and enjoy using public transportation. We generally like to stay in the historic center of a city as that seems to maximize sightseeing time, but not knowing Munich at all, I would love the hear the suggestions of people who are familiar. Thank you!

I too like the area around Marienplatz and Viktualienmarkt. Two places we stayed this past December are Hotel Lux and Hotel am Viktualienmarkt. Both were great (second time at the last one) and I would stay at either one again in a heartbeat, FWIW.

On our past visits to Munich we've stayed near the Munich Ost train station (Mariott, Residence Inn and Motel One), a short hop by train to Marienplatz and the Hauptbahnhof.
We've also stayed near the Hauptbahnhof several times (Hotel Marc Munchen - adults only - loved this hotel), and near SendlingerTor (Hotel Mueller). All have been very convenient.
While the area around the Hauptbahnhof is a bit seedy, it's perfectly safe and incredibly convenient - it's an easy walk to Marienplatz and well suited for day trips that leave from the Hauptbahnhof (such as Salzburg, etc) and makes departure to the airport easy (as does Munich Ost).
But for the utmost in convenience, staying right at Marientplatz is ideal, assuming you can find quiet accommodation (preferably with air con in the summer, as leaving windows open will be quite noisy).
Munich is very easy to get around via the S-bahn and U-bahn, so as long as you're near a train stop, you're good to go.

We will be in Munich at the beginning of June and are staying at New City Center Stays 2. We have an apartment and it is close to the Hauptbahnhof. I had a hard time finding lodging closer to the Marienplatz. It seems close to a lot of things and will give us the room to spread out a little bit - traveling with husband and two sons - 18 and 20. Hoping it's a good spot!

I stayed at Hotel Schlicker "Zum Goldenen Lowen" when I was in Munich and the location was excellent, right off Marienplatz but relatively quiet (the only noise that bothered me were the church bells which are quite nearby!). I enjoyed the hotel.
