First time to Munich
 

I will be arriving in Munich on Sept 16 (by train from Oberammergau). I will spend the night in Munich (or vicinity) and then catch an 1130 plane the next day. What is a good hotel, convenient to transportation and the sights, and in my price range (approx $200)?

I would stay close to the train station - Hauptbahnhof - for convinience. Last month my husband had a similar situation, returning to Munich for 1 night before a flight, and we stayed at the Kings Hotel on Dachauer strasse. It was a block or so from the Hauptbahnhof and quite comfortable. We used Expedia and got a 89 euro/night rate. It was a 10 minute or so walk to the Marienplatz.

Le Meridian across from the train station. Very easy to get off the train from the airport and then catch the subway system around the city. Very nice hotel in your price range with a very helpful staff.

Sorry but unless you can get it through a discounter you will NOT get LeMeridien on 16 September for anywhere near $200 a night.

I agree with its convenience and it is a very niuce business-style hotel but out of your price range.

Thanks for the response. I checked and Le Meridien is way out of my price range. I will check on Kings Hotel. Anybody have any experience with Uhland or Platzl Hotels? Are they near transportation?

I've heard that the Uhland is very nice. I stayed at the Hotel Deutches Theater and thought it was great, nice buffet breakfast. Consider that the area just south of the Hauptbahnhof is filled with strip clubs and the like, but I didn't find it especially creepy. The Duetches Theater (and some of the other hotels) seemed like a nice oasis. Also, downtown Munich is very walkable, so you could stay near Marienplatz and still be within walking distance of the station. There are subway stations convenient to almost anywhere downtown that can get you to the airport easily.

We walked past the Uhland during our trip and it looked nice. There is an U-Bahn (subway) stop close by - 2-3 blocks. I am not sure how close the S-Bahn (train) is. The S-Bahn is the one that goes to the airport, but if you stay near an U-Bahn station, it is easy to change to the S-Bahn.

I think Oktoberfest begins Sept. 16 so you probably will pay a little more for a room if you can find one. I will be staying at Hotelissimo Haberstock in Munich from Sept.10 til Sept.17. It is a 3* and is quite nice except no air conditioning. We have only needed it a couple of times(at night) during the past few years. The room rate for a twin is 98 Euros but it does go up for Octoberfest. It is located within feet of the main station.

Thanks for all your responses. Uhland requires two night stays duing festivals. Drats. I ended up booking a room with Hotel Platzl near Marienplatz. It seems convenient to transportaion and tourist stuff. (I will only be there one afternoon and evening.) Places were either too expensive or booked up.

The Platzl looks like a nice place. I had considered it for our last night in Munich as well, but the rates were beyond our budget for this trip.
