First time to Ireland

I will be travelling to Ireland in Jan. with my husband. He is going for business, I'm going for the experience. We are staying in the town of Bray, just south of Dublin. I will be by myself during the week and won't have a car. I would like to try to see some sites. Is this possible? I am quite nervous about the idea of trying to navigate by myself. We would also like to site see on the weekend since it will be the only time my husband has free. Any suggestions on how we can make the most of a short trip. My husband will only have Saturday and Sunday for site seeing we will leave on a Monday. And will any thing be open in January?

dski:

Congrats on your trip. It should be fun. From Bray, it appears that you can easily get into the city on the train. A local (like Siobhan) can probably give you great advice as to where to get off to see what.

You best bet to see some sites not in Dublin would be to take the train into the city and then take a tour from there. Bus Eireann has day tours to all sorts of sites and there are quite a few other companies that do this also. The website for Bus Eireann is:
http://www.buseireann.ie/site/home/
Click on the "Your Journey" link and the "Tours" under that. Traveling on your own should not be a problem.

For some heritage sites go to:
http://www.heritageireland.ie/
Also, visitdublin.com is the website for Dublin tourism.

I hope this helps. I'm not much of an expert on Dublin or train travel as I usually leave the driving to me. Have fun

Dear Dski: We were in Ireland for several weeks this past summer without a car. Thanks to people like Ned, we felt confident we could make good use of the Bus Eireann system. They were comfortable and on time.

Whenever we had any doubts, we could always pop into a local tourist office and they'd check the bus routes for us.

I took a quick peek at Bray and instantly found this website: http://www.bray.ie/index.htm, which has links to Bus Eireann and other places. Since Bray is part of country Wicklow, the links to parts of Wicklow would be most helpful.

Enjoy your explorations!

Dear Bill and Amelia, Thanks for the input. I will definitely check out the bus line. If you think of anything else please post it. I'll take whatever info you can provide. Thanks for sharing.

Hi dksi,

Do you have to stay in Bray for a reason at the weekend? I am asking because I believe the dart service is closing at the weekends for maintenance and the bus will be ages into Dublin with the traffic. Why not move into Dublin for the weekend and walk the city? Its also closer to the airport than Bray.

During the week the dart i working and ther is lots to do in the city. Take an open top bus tour, o shopping on Grafton Street, see the book of kells in Trinity. Its an easy city to manage just get a pocket map. Let me know if ther is any specific thing you want to see.
