First Time to Greece!
Hi all,

I'm hoping for some help in planning our trip to Greece. We're thinking early June and really want relaxation along with culture. How is the weather in June? What is a good plan for first-timers? We know we want a little bit of Athens (which shouldn't be hard since we'll have to come through there), Santorini and maybe Mykonos or Ios. Any thoughts? Also, where should we start looking as far as the actual travel/lodging? We're coming from SFO and have a budget of around $5000...

hi jakes-girl, you're going to have a great time!
June is a wonderful time to go to Greece. It will be sunny and warm without being too hot.

A good plan for first-timers, so depends on what you generally like to do when you travel, and whether you are more of a stay-in-one-place kind of person or more of a see-as-much-as-you-possibly-can kind of person.

How long will you be gone? One week? Two? Three? It would help to know that!

Traditional Greece or party scene? Beaches important? Natural wonders? Antiquities?

I love Athens, and Santorini is very nice as well. A trip that people seem to like is Athens-Santorini-Naxos. Search this forum for information about those three sites and you will get many good ideas that will help you forumulate more questions. I'm not a big Mykonos fan, tho others like it.

As for where to start looking for lodging, try this site, as well as - the tripvisor site shows reviews of the individual hotels.

We'd like a little bit of everything (traditional Greece, nightlife, beaches, etc.), but really want relaxation and beauty first and foremost. We're planning on being in Greece for 10 days but could possibly extend it if that seems too rushed for all we decide to do.

Thanks for all the tips Eleni, I'm sure they will be helpful once I really start digging deep into them!

Jakes_girl, June is a perfect time to visit Greece, and if there's any way you can go for longer than ten days, try to do so.

For such a short time you will have to decide between the mainland or the islands. Leave a couple days for Athens at the end of the trip if you do the islands. Mykonos (take a day trip to Delos) and Santorini have a good mix of nightlife and scenery. Mykonos and Ios have good beaches, and Ios is known as a party island.

With little more than a week to enjoy the islands, it would be best to limit yourself to two, IMO.

June is a wonderful time to visit Greece. I would forget Ios if I were you. It is a party island but you will get plenty of that on Mykonos anyway. My suggestion is to spend the 1st 2 nights in Athens, then go on to Santorini for 4 nights, Mykonos for 3 and back to Athens for your last night. As already suggested, if you can extend your trip even slightly it would be worth it.

Heimdall and Carolina, thanks for the input. We can extend a bit, so I'm not too worried about that. I'm wondering if anyone has something to say about Crete? Should it be an option too, and if so, which of them all is essential?
