First Time in Rome
 

Two Seniors, making a visit to Rome in October for the first time. Looking for Lodging for 3 days near the Visconte Hotel(Too Expensive). What to see? Where to go? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.Leaving from Florida. Any help. Thanks.

To find a hotel in the same area as the Visconti Palace, go to www.venere.com. Click on Rome. Then click - in the column at the left - on "Vaticano". The list of hotels will come up with average price given. To see exactly where each hotel is, click on the hotel's name and then on the tab "Lcation".

"What to see? Where to go?" You could start by clicking on Destinations above and reading a bit about Rome.

Tripadvisor now has a Google map (mashup) feature. This link will take you the map of Rome hotels:

You can then zoom in, center it on your desired location (I think the pull-down for "castel sant'angelo" will get you close), then hit "reload map" and see all the hotels in that area. You can set dates and prices and see just the ones available in your price range, and you can read reviews, get quotes etc. Pretty cool.

I highly recommend visiting the Borghese Museum. You should try to get tickets in advance. There is a 2 hr time limit once you are inside.

It is considered one of the world's most beautiful museums.

Must see churches Santa Maria Maggiore then S. Giovanni in Laterano and then Saint Peter's. If you go in this order the first two will not be anti-climactic. Between the first two is a great bakery called Arte del'pane. A final church is the Carlino; great architectural effects without color.
