First time in English countryside

Thank again you so much everybody, for the tips on what to see in the east and also for the information on car rentals. Since this will be a relatively short trip, we are planning to come back next year for an extended stay in all of Great Britain.

flanner about nailed it -- airports (not just LHR) are generally the easiest places. They are usually (relatively) rural -- as not IN a congested city/town, they usually have all the rental companies in the same area, and most have good transport connections.

I had friends pick up a car in central Newcastle (after I tried to convince them to use the airport) and they ended up driving around in circles for more than an hour and ended up back at the rental office. The agent took such pity on them he drove them out of the city and took a bus back to work.
