First Time Euro Traveler

Planning a trip to Amsterdam in March for the Jam in the Dam event (jam music). Just looking for some general comments on what to expect or to stay away from. Please and thank you.

Hi Cork! I see this is your first post on this board. Welcome!

You will likely get the best information from this board if you tell us a little about yourself and your interests and concerns, whether you're traveling alone and have safety concerns, how long you'll be in Amsterdam, etc.

It's hard to know what to tell you as to what to expect unless I know what your concerns are. Budget? Hotels are rather expensive compared to countries like Germany or Spain. I don't remember food being terribly expensive.

It's a beautiful, beautiful city, very walkable, with bicycles the primary mode of transportation. My sister and I felt very safe there.

In short, tell us more about what you're looking for, and you'll get more responses. If you don't get the information you want, post a reply to your message asking for more - just something to bring it back to the top.

You might also have better luck if you redo your request with a new post with the word "Amsterdam" in the title, so the Amsterdam lovers will have their interest piqued.

Good luck, and have a great time!

Trams run in the city, you buy a long ticket from the newsagents, you stamp these on entering the tram
Try and stay in an old hotel not an international you will love it. i like Bruewer on the canal of the same name
Trains run on time. (to the second)
Protitution is legal and very open
Soft drug policy you probably know
Amsterdam is always busy and has gerat museums, apple cake (forget american apple pie it is very much second league to dutch)

hey I think you need to buy a book. I recomend rough guide for this city.

Might prefer Haarlam

Amsterdam is great. I tell people all the time that their first trip to Europe should be to Amsterdam because:
1) Everyone speaks English
2) It is a Euro city with the Euro feel
3) No weird food, the Dutch eat the same as in the US for the most part.
4) Minimal culture shock

Amsterdam is essentially a semi-circle that is every easy to walk. I stayed out by Vondelpark/Holland Casino/Hard Rock Restaurant, and it was very easy to walk to Dam Square, maybe 20-30 minutes...all on main busy streets.

You won't need to get travelers checks. Just use an ATM to get local cash as needed. Make sure your ATM code is all numbers, since letters don't work as well (I think they don't line up the same way)... Don't use dollars to pay for things, use Euros.
