first stay in London-what to see/where to stay
my wife and I are cruising from Southampton Oct 21, 2011. We are flying into Heathrow Oct 18 inorder to allow sometime to explore London. We are from Seattle. We are 58 and 65 years of age and very physically active and fit.
We are interested seeing as much of London as possible. We are fond of churches, museums, and other historical sites but would appreciate a top ten list of places to visit in the city and also recommendations for hotels. Our hotel budget is in the $200-$300/night range. We belong to Carlson club and generally like their hotels but appreciate experienced travelers recommendations.
We like to walk.

They actually sell a Top 10 London guide that will give a good start to your research.

Some things to get you going:
St Pauls
Westminster Abbey
Big Ben
Tate and Tate Modern museums
British Museum
British Library
The City
Hyde and St James' Park
Buckingham Palace
The Tower (#1 site in London I think - expect to spend half a day here)
Trafalgar Sq
West End Theatre

So many other things to see (there are tonnes of Wren churches in London as well if you google it)

Hope this helps give you a good start...

I'm sure you will hear from many others - London is such a popular spot and there are many things to do and see.

Jamikins list is a good start; there are only a couple of things on it that I have not experienced. I also enjoyed the Royal Observatory in Greenwich and a Thames boat ride, but I would not put these above some of the sites already suggested, especially since your time will be very limited between your flight and cruise schedules.

Grouping things together a bit, my top choices might be something like:

Tower/Tower Bridge
Westminster Abbey/Big Ben/Westminster Bridge
St Pauls/Millenium Bridge/Tate(not that I love the Tate so much - I wanted to see Rebecca Horn's Concert for Anarchy and it was at another museum - but it is just across the bridge from St Pauls.)
British Museum/Library
Southwark Cathedral/Roman Excavation/Borough Market

You will only be there three days -- and day 1 will be less than a full day -- and jet lagged.

So instead of a top 10 -- you really should be asking for a 'top 5' . . .

Click Destinations at the top of this page --there is a guide to London --and then study jamikins' list and pick the 4 or 5 that sound interesting to you . . . (her full list is about 8 days worth)

You might want to take one of the London Walks walking tours. I've found them to be very informative.
