First night-Orvieto or Spoleto?
We're flying into Rome in July and have lots of recommendations to go to Orvieto as a first stop. I definitely want to get out to the piano grand one day and thought it might be good to go to Spoleto first from the Rome Airport. Is is easy to train to spoleto and rent a car there? And would it be bad to miss orvieto? Thanks-I don't know what I would do without this site!

Spoleto would be a better base to visit the Piano Grande. Check autoeurope.com for car rental options. I believe you can rent in Spoleto.
What is your entire plan? How many days will you be in Umbria and what other places are you planning to visit?

next we're staying in bevagna for 3 days, then the val d'orcia for 3 days, then florence for 2 days. i don't think we'll want to do too much sight-seeing our first day, so it comes down to which town is prettier!

Orvieto is prettier than Spoleto (my feeling).
Another idea- you could pick up the car at the Rome airport and then go directly to Bavagna your first night, visiting the Piano Grande as a day trip from there. One less time changing hotels.
Also, be sure to stop in Norcia on your way to the Piano Grande. You could pick up some great meats and cheeses for a picnic and also see a lovely town.

I apologize, honeyluna, for hijacking your thread a bit. But I'd really be interested in hearing more about what people enjoyed about Orvieto.
I'm asking because I'm planning a second trip to Umbria and thinking about different places to stay. I'm now wondering if I should consider Orvieto?
I was in Orvieto for a short day trip last year and I didn't leave much of an impression. But it was pretty rushed -- I took the train, got in about 11:30 a.m., made a beeline for the Duomo (which was fantastic) strolled around in the afternoon and left about 6 p.m. So, I admit I didn't see much beyond the long street that I walked from the funicular to the Duomo and a bit of park area around the funicular.
What have I been missing???
Thanx!

We stayed 3nights in Orvieto and loved the town!
Duomo
Underground cave tour (facinating)
well with double helix stairs
Etruscan museum
Etruscan tombs arch. site
art galleries & shops
excellent restaurants
Orvieto Classico!
1/2 day trip to Civita di Bagnoreggio
day trip to Todi and Deruta
even pasaggiata (SP?) very special

Thanks Dayle, very interesting! Underground Orvieto does intrigue....
Where do you think you found the most interesting passegiata? In one of the main squares (such as the one in front of the Duomo?) Or on the large main street that seems to run to the funicular?
I appreciate your ideas on this!
