Finland in January

I intend to visit Finland in January, will it be very cold or just a crazy idea. I would like to go to Laplands, seeing the reindeer herd, or possibly the Northern Light or having a little bit or cross country skiing which I have never done before. Any other suggestions or comments???

May I ask why you posted this question on the UK Board? Perhaps you will do better to post on the Finland Board. Just a thought? Of course, maybe some folks on this board will be able to give you the information you are seeking.

KY,

I apologize for my earlier posting. My computer "burped" and somehow your posting for Finland showed up on my screen while I was on the UK board. So, I assumed you were posting a question on Finland to the UK board. My mistake.

Hi mm,

It's all one board. The country headings are just for ease of searching.

Welcome to Finland!!!
If you are lucky, it won't be that cold yet in January, it might be -10c but worst case scenario (especially in Lapland)it can be -40c.
In such cold weather, you can't really do much outside, but the again as an experience, you might enjoy a snow safari, Santa Claus country, a visit to the icehotel(made of ice, you sleep in furs on icebeds and even the glasses are made of ice..quite interesting...)
It will be dark most of the day during midwinter, around 22.12, and after that it gets a bit lighter, in other words a 3-4h of daylight that expands throughout the year until midsummer when the sun doesn't go down at all.
You could also try snowmobiles, downhill skiing, a smokesauna, snowboarding ...etc all the ski resorts are major partyplaces during the winter, so I'm sure you'll have fun.
I hope you will enjoy your trip. Iam myself taking my family for a one month holiday to Asia and Australia to escape the winter...
regards
veronica

Thanks for the info. I am from a warm country and want to experience some tolerable coldness, and try some activities which Veronica mentioned.

@Veronica: Can you tell me how I can book into the ice hotel which you mentioned. Have a nice trip to Asia and Australia.
