Aha, so Stu is from CA. That explains his jacket jihad. Happily his wife is interested in maintaining standards ! A jacket takes up hardly any room in a suitcase or your backpack, and your hotel can press it if rumpled. A good linen one can be worn fashionably rumpled. I just received some pix of a party in Madrid. All the men, including the under-20s, were in suits. I guess it just depends on the circle in which one travels.

A party in Madrid July with men in suits would almost HAVE to be a wedding or huge celebration ceremony/ graduation, engagement, anniversary.. No way it is a simple night out with the guys in ANY circle.

What about the other 10,000 French men & tourists at the 350 restaurants I've dined at, that did not have jackets??? There were probably 1,500 men in jeans - and these were nice restaurants. The jeans to jackets ratio was probably 50 to 1. I dined at a Christian Constant restaurant in Toulouse a week ago today - no jackets & lots of jeans.

THe party in Madrid was in a house on the Castellana for New Year's Eve. My ex has lived there for 51 yrs and says that oftentimes men will not wear ties but still do wear jackets in the better restaurants.
