Finding lodging in Granada that does not require climbing hills.
 

I am traveling with a friend who has trouble walking up hills. Can someone recommend lodging or a neighborhood in Granada that would be easier for sightseeing.

Anywhere in the vicinity of the Cathedral, Calle Gran Via (several 'sites' to see) or Plaza Santa Ana (where you catch the buses to the Alhambra).
Without knowing what you are aiming for in the way of budget or style, all I can offer is this - http://www.hostalrodri.com/ or similar hostals or pensions which is my style.

Since the main site is El Alhambra.. take a taxi or the mini bus up THAT hill.

Then you have the crypts at the Cathedral.. flat city walking. Most hotels IN Granada center should be fine. Stay away from Albaicin and Alhambra area , or simply take a very cheap taxi home in the evenings.

Does your friend manage stairs? I ask because some hotels/hostals in Granada don't have lifts (elevators), necessitating steep climb up narrow stairs. Always ask in advance, or if they have a ground-floor room. Also in the centre of the city, footpaths are narrow and uneven, and roads are often made of cobblestones, making it tough for those with mobility problems. While taxis are plentiful, hailing one in the street isn't always easy and there may be a long trek to the nearest rank.

YOu will want to stay in any of the many hotels in the downtown area, or Centro. From there you can take frequent red mini-buses to the Alhambra Hill and the Albaicin quarter.

There are many downtown hotels to choose from; we stayed in the AC Santa Paula but there are hotels in all price ranges in the centro. State your budget and we can offer more on target advice.

Depending on your budget, you can stay at the Parador on the Alhambra hill. It's sits within the Alhambra grounds. The AC Santa Paula and Fontecruz Granada are well located for walking around the center of the city. The Hospes is also another excellent choice, but again, it will depend on your budget.

Thank you for your suggestions. A lot of the hotels I am researching are up hills. I would like to stay in a location near the Cathedral, close to buses and pay no more than $125 a night total. (Paula and Fontecruz are much more.)
WomBatt recommended Hostal Rodri which is #1 on Trip Advisor. Rick Steves and Maribel recommend Reina Christina and Anacapri for their central location. (Unfortunately, Anacapri has no rooms on the May dates we will be there.) Is the Hostal Rodri near the Cathedral? Are any of you familiar with Reina Christina or Gar-Anat Hotel de Peregrinos? Which of these three would you choose...or do you have other recommendations?

Hostal Rodri gets good reviews. The website tells you that it is 200 meters from the Cathedral, so yes, I would call that "close."

By the way, thanks for your trip report. I have printed it out and plan to take on my trip. I also made reservations for the Alhambra based on your experience.

Not sure if it fits your price range, but the Melia Granada is in the center of town and its largely level. Cab or bus up to the Alhambra. IMO, it is a bit difficult to see the rest of Granada when staying up the hill.

Be sure and have breakfast at Hostal Rodri! It is the most amazing breakfast room you will ever see and the food is good! Hostel Rodri was the least expensive hotel on my trip to Spain, and it was about the nicest. It does have an elevator.

I stayed at the Palacio de los Navas in 2009 and loved it. It's located on the busy tapas street Calle Navas so you're in the heart of activity. This is close to the Cathedral and an easy walk to the bus to take you to the Alhambra or Albaicin area.
