Finding Gaiola Bridge in Naples
Long time reader, first time poster. I owe a lot of reviews and trip reports. I've been living in Europe for two years and have indulged in all it's beauty!
I am creating an itinerary for our April 2012 trip to Naples, Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast, Rome and Venice. My wife is driving me crazy trying to find the Gaiola Bridge. Her sister and brother in law will be joining us on the trip. Has anyone visited the residence or the area? Any tips on how to get there? Thanks! Mickey |
From Naples Centre you are probably 20-30 minutes from the Bridge.
I used Google Maps to get Driving directions to the Bridge: (coordinates: 40.791667, 14.186944 3D2D) Naples Centre to Gaiola bridge: 1. Head southeast on Piazza Municipio toward Via Alcide De Gasperi. 2. Turn right to stay on Piazza Municipio (signs for Via Acton). 3. Continue onto Via Ammiraglio Ferdinando Acton 4. Keep left at the fork, follow signs for Fuorigrotta/Piazza Vittoria. 5. Continue onto Galleria della Vittoria 6. Turn right onto Via Domenico Morelli 7. Take the 1st left onto Via Vannella Gaetani 8. Continue onto Riviera di Chiaia 9. Continue onto Via Piedigrotta 10. Turn left onto Piazza Piedigrotta 11. Continue onto Via Mergellina 12. Turn right onto Via Orazio 13. Turn right to stay on Via Orazio 14. Slight left onto Via Francesco Petrarca 15. Continue onto Via Alessandro Manzoni 16. Turn right onto Viale Virgilio 17. Take the 1st left onto Via Tito Lucrezio Caro 18. Turn right onto Discesa Gaiola. You should be able to walk down and take nice shots from that spot. It is a protected marine area so understand you may need to do some walking to a closer view. |
BTW, if you are living in Europe I am sure a lot of people could bnefit from your viewpoint and experience...share once in a while. :-D

Ha! Although I didn't know of those islets till now, we've explored that area several times - coming very near to your route when crossing the 'Dicesa di Gaiola' on Via L Caro after a stroll on the Parco Virgiliano headland.... link to map later!
If not driving, whilst a taxi from the city centre would be easiest - and not awfully expensive - you could also use the ordinary ANM bus... let me know if you need help find which, but several go that way. Or it might be nicest of all to take the Posillipo trip on the opentop HoHo bus - there's a link to their site, and photos from our own trip, here.... http://www.pbase.com/isolaverde/nap_ho_ho&page=all With either of those last two options, you'd need to get off after the road to Marechiaro... http://www.pbase.com/isolaverde/image/141238330 .... ideally before the Parco Virgiliano bridge - and as close to the school shown in this as you can.... http://www.pbase.com/isolaverde/image/128356430 Can't tell you much about the physical state of the road you'd be taking, but in other respects we've always found that area to be one where it's totally OK to wander around! Italian wiki has it that the Regione of Campania bought the islands... http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isola_della_Gaiola .... and they appear to be accessible.... http://www.incampania.com/EN/benicul...2&Info_ID=4443 .... but I'd strongly recommend that you contact the AMP people for firm visit details... http://www.areamarinaprotettagaiola.it/Contact.htm And if you want to land there, do note the name of anyone who says you can - only I've a suspicion that it may not be easily possible, even on the glassbottom boat tour? And perhaps confirm when those run - whilst I've seen 'except for Mondays, April to October' in Italian on sites more recent than 2007, no precise dates were given. http://www.areamarinaprotettagaiola.it/guided_tour.htm http://www.areamarinaprotettagaiola....water_park.htm Best to be sure - before building up everyone's hopes! Oh yes, that map - with the islands right at the bottom, and the school marked on it, thanks to Google.... http://www.pbase.com/isolaverde/imag...38553/original Peter PS - To tell the truth, spousal wishes aside, I think this would make a more impressive outing... http://www.areamarinaprotettagaiola....on_english.htm |

Peter,
I really appreciate the level of detail in your post and the great suggestions with links! Decisions, decisions, decisions!!! I think the taxi would be the easiest on me as the navigator! But I will look into the bus. We might just stop by to get some photos and then check out the underwater park the next morning. Thanks again! -Mickey |
