Finding a homebase in Italy close to transportation

My husband and I are planning a trip to Italy in the fall of 2014.

We would like to stay one month and plan to rent an apartment.

I am needing advise on a location for our homebase, so that we may take advantage of the rail transportation.

We will be wanting to explore the north, as we have not explored that area on our past trips.

We will want to revisit the south as that area was home to my husband's family.

Would it be possible to not book lodging and find a room or Bed and Breakfast when we reach an area?

Any and all information will be appreciated. Thank you, atmrjy

I'm confused.

You want to rent an apartment for a whole month. Then you want to travel by train to other cities and stay there in B&Bs that you pick up on the run? Aren't you then paying double for a lot of nights?

Might it not make more sense to get an apartment for a couple of weeks and then to reserve B&Bs a couple of nights in advance (to be sure you're not shut out) as you travel the other couple of weeks.

I would rent 3 or 4 apartments in advance---one location will not do it.

Thanks for your input.
Would anyone have a suggestion for a central homemade in the north near transportation?

You need to be more specific about which towns/areas you want to visit. There is no one place in the north (or south) you can visit all the northern areas/towns. Many towns have no train service and are better served by buses, but we really need a clue of which ones you are interested in.

Verona is a good transportation hub in the northeastern part of Italy. A few different train lines cross there and there are a number of bus lines to other areas nearby as well.

I've been doing extensive research on my own upcoming trip to the NE, and I've also found that Verona has very good bus and rail connections.

I have not made a city itinerary. The transportation question is most important to me at this time.
The Verona area seems to be where I'll start looking for an apartment.
Any suggestion will be very helpful.

Thanks again,
