Film Question For Tiff

Which do you prefer when shooting Black & White, PlusX or TriX? I tend to lean towards TriX for the graininess in the enlargements.

Honestly, I think it's just easier to work with in the developing process. You'd have to work hard to ruin TriX film, like expose it to light. I think it's very forgiving to amatuer photographers, such as myself. I mean, I've never used PlusX, so I can't say anything negative about it, but I know and love and rely on TriX when shooting b/w photos.

Thanks Matt. I agree. PlusX is great if you have good avaliable light. Plus like I said earlier, enlargements with TriX give you more "mood" with the graininess, especially if you do a 2 stop push.

Originally, Nebraska. Then Chicago for a few years and then they got sick of me and shipped me off to London!

Oh mat003, LOL. I wish someone would get sick of me and ship me off to London!!! Can you share what terrible things you did so that I can get my someone to pay my way to London? That would be a very good travel tip. Best wishes to you. P.S. I have a feeling that they really miss you.

I must admit that I always just purchase any black and white film from any shop I happen to be near. There is this little family run business near my home that is my favorite. I am SUCH an amateur, but whenever I shoot with black and white they must be giving me TriX, because as Matt stated, it is very forgiving and as you stated, I prefer the graininess, too. Italy is kind to a rookie such as I, you CANNOT take a bad picture there!

I received so many compliments on my photography but it has little to do with my ability and more to do with the picturesque nature of Italy and other places I have been lucky enough to visit.

I feel the same way about sailboats, you cannot take a bad picture of a sailboat. Children, too.

I'm just a lil rookie that has been lucky with a few good shots. ((P))

So, the ultimate picture would be of a young child on a sailboat somewhere in Italy? I'll have to keep my eye out for that.

LoveItaly- the travel tip you're looking for: To get a free plane ticket to London, go into publishing and fight tooth and nail to get a promotion that includes an overseas transfer!!!

Oh shoot mat003, that sounds like to much trouble, LOL.

BTW, I love black and white photographs. I truly think they are so much more interesting generally speaking then colored photographs.

Never had a chance to shoot sailboats. I really like hiking on Mt Rainier and taking lots of pictures, my hiking mates on the other hand, get annoyed that they have to wait for me.

Oh yes Tiff, Tom is right, today is Sunday not Saturday. Well basically we are all aware of life. Take care, and enjoy your long weekend.

I love b/w photos of people more than I like b/w photos of landscapes. I enjoy both, I just enjoy b/ws of people better. I like the color associated with landscapes, like all the green of Ireland. That's something a b/w photo could never capture.

I agree about b/w for pictures of people and color for landscapes. But I like a mix of both when taking pictures of buildings. All this talk of b/w photography makes want to set up a darkroom again.

Hey Tom, do you mind if I ask you a question? When you go in October, are you checking or carrying on your luggage? I know it is a totally off the subject question, but I was curious. LoveItaly, when you go, do you check or carry? I have been debating. You started this thread Tom, so hopefully you won't mind me changing the subject.

Tiff, I am leaning towards going with a carry-on. The tsa agents are going to love me. I will have my cerry-on, camera bag and Bi-Pap machine(it doesnt count towards my carry-on total since it is medical equipment)

And yes I agree, LoveItaly is one the nicest people I have encountered on these boards. Must say you are to.

Hi Tiff, it is not when we do not know what day it is but when we do not know what month it is that we have to start worrying!!!

Tiff, I always check my suitcase. And I have a small carryon unless I am going to Italy and then I have a larger carryon. I have been very fortunate (knock on wood) I have never had luggage not arrive at the airport with me. I have had a few things stolen or missing since Sept 11th which has irritated me however. I do not put anything into my checked luggage that would cause a big problem if it ends up missing.

Aren't you glad you canceled your tour and are going it alone? You are going to love it, so much freedom!

With regards to carrying on - I really think I should consider it. One thing is for certain, I am very much the believer in packing light, especially to Europe.

Lastly I am glad they don't count your bi-pap for as a carry-on, they shouldn't. (I worked in the medical industry for many years and had always been told they don't, but good to know from someone first hand.)

That was so funny about the "don't know what day it is in MN but...". I didn't even notice when I wrote Saturday before!
