Figueres/Cadaques/Lloret-del-mar/Girona

Hi all -

We need some first hand guidance on how best to spend just a few days in this area. We will be arriving via train to Figueres (from a few weeks in France), midday on October 11. We are scheduled to fly from Barcelona to Bilbao on October 14. We will rent a car, but then where to go with such limited time. Some time ago I read about the village of Cadaques, and had that on my must see list, but you know how it is, once you start researching you find so many places to see, it is hard to choose. If we arrive, rent the car, and are ready to go by, say 1:30, is there enough time to see the Dali Museum and a little of Figueres before taking that crazy drive to Cadaques? Should we stay in Figueres and go to Cadaques the next morning? Should we choose to see either the Dali museum or his house? We have a reservation at an airport hotel for the night before we fly out, so we have a total of 2 1/2 days in the area.

Thanks much.

seeing both over the years, I would choose some time in Cadaques and see the Dali home. Here are some pix for familiarization to the area....it includeds Barcelona, just scroll down to Girona and on to Cadaques.

You'll have plenty of time if you overnight in Cadaques. Figueres to Cadaques is a short distance (36 km) and the 'crazy drive' is crazy only if you attempt to speed. Apart from the Dali museum, there isn't much else to see in Figueres.
Reservation is necessary to visit Dali's house in Port Lligat.
I'd chose Tossa de Mar over Lloret de Mar, but the road between the two towns is absolutely stunning.

I would definitely recommend seeing both the museum in Figueres and the Dali House in Port Lligat. Leaving Figueres before 5pm should give you adequate daylight for the final mountainous leg to Cadaques.
We drove the route in July with trepidation, brought on by the reputation that the road has received from other travellers. Quite honestly, there is little to fear as all cars elect to travel at a sensible pace and resign themselves to no overtaking. Getting around cyclists can be tricky at times and the only other road users that can be a headache are motorcyclists who can be overenthusiastic when it comes to cornering.
Book both venues although queues at the Museum should not be as long as we found them in high summer. Do present on time to the Dali House as you are expected to move through the interior of the house within 15-20 minutes from the time you have booked your entry.

We're staying in Cadaques for two nights mid-September and have advance purchased tickets for the Dali house. We'll be driving up from Barcelona airport. I suppose posting then will be too late to help, but I'll probably put something up at http://likelivingthere.blogspot.com/
