Fifty selected museums in Britain
The London daily paper, the Independent, asked a panel to choose the best museums in Britain, defined chiefly as those that are fascinating places to spend an autumn afternoon. I was blown away by the British Library with the Magna Carta, and their collection of antique books, manuscripts and other literary exhibits...what happened!!???...OK, maybe is not labeled Museum, but to me is better than many on that list.....whatever.

I agree that the BL is a splendid display, with important items well shown. I said in my operning note that the Independent's list strikes me as ecclectuc. They may have leaned too far towartds presentational values, or, to put it bluntly, to showmanship. But at least they had the good taste to omit the Jorvik Centre, so they only leaned: they didn't fall over. And the list does discourage the tendency of some visitors to stay here in London.

Ben Haines
Some interesting results and I'm quite frankly amazed that not a single attraction in Cumbria - one of *the* tourist destinations in the UK - has made it into the list. Granted, Cumbria
is well renowned for its scenery but there are also some excellent
museums...

e.g.

Aquarium of the Lake

Brantwood

Dove Cottage

Holker Hall/Lakeland Motor Museum

World of Beatrix Potter Attraction

...and the new Slapestones attraction which is soon on its way, to
name just a very small handful.

It makes me wonder a little about exactly how this survey was
conducted.

Regards,

Paul

Dr. Paul H.
