FF Miles

I may be the last one on earth to know this, but just in case it is helpful to know:

Someone is giving me 100,000 miles. Since they can't transfer their miles to my account, the will purchase four tickets for a specific reservation for each person in my family to a destination that requires 25,000 miles/ticket. Changes can be made after, but at a cost of $100/ticket plus another overall $15 fee I think it is. This is all legal and within AA's regulations per AA agents. I called and checked twice to be sure. Am I missing anything?

FF miles cover the fare but not the taxes to due on the tickets, so you're friend will be charged the tax when ordering.

Dorothy01 Aug 19th, 2003 09:18 AM

It is legal. There are no taxes or fees on domestic flights within the US. Most 25,000 award tickets (at least on AA) have no charge UNLESS they are redeemed less than 21 days before travel.

I have accumulated over 1,000,000 AA miles through travel so I know what I am talking about.

Am I understanding this correctly -- if we are unable to use our FF miles (on USAir) -- for example, due to medical reasons -- we can use them to purchase tickets for 2 family members rather than just lose these FF miles?

AAFrequentFlyer Aug 19th, 2003 10:27 AM

I totally agree with Dorothy. There is no tax and/or charges on AA domestic awards. And yes, you will be charged $100 per if you need to change dates.
It's within AA rules if and only if the tickets were gifted. They could not be sold or traded. Is there a way AA can find out if infact they were sold or traded? In most cases, no, but if they do the tickets will be cancelled and the mileage account owner could loose any and all miles in his/hers account.
Have a great trip!

AAFrequentFlyer Aug 19th, 2003 10:28 AM

Oh, and I forgot to ask this?
Why is this on the Europe forum? :-)

BeachBoi Aug 19th, 2003 10:42 AM

AA....She wasnt getting any answers on the US Forum :D.....S

Intrepid Aug 19th, 2003 12:12 PM

Well then maybe she should have tried the airlines forum. Why does someone like this ask a question like this rather than calling AA and asking them..afraid of the answer they'll get????..baffling.

AAFrequentFlyer Aug 19th, 2003 12:17 PM

intrepid,
If you took time to read the original post, you would have noticed that they did call AA, not once, TWICE!
They just wanted to know if possibly they are missing something.
Please read before posting!

Beach Boi and AAFrequent Flyer :
I know, I know - it's not a travel question, but HOW DO YOU MAKE "FACES" like that ????? I hope the grouchy types will not admonish me for asking this frivolous question !

BeachBoi Aug 19th, 2003 01:00 PM

jenny...your question is NOT frivolous..every question is important....as is every poster....as for the "grouchy types"....what can I say? Maybe some happy juice for them,eh?? .:D Go to the "Search" box and type in the word "smileys"...then look over to the left of your screen and click on the responses.......S

I think we are a knowledgeable group and that this is a very good question to ask on this board.
In addition, if you make changes you can make changes usually using the same departure and arrival cities. If you wish to change cities, you might not be allowed (depending on airline and current plan) or you might be allowed for another fee. When you are using miles for US tickets, this might not be such a good deal, but if you are going overseas, it isn't bad.

I am delighted ! Wow !!! =-o
Thanks , BeachBoi !

BeachBoi ~ Down boy! I posted this at the same time on both boards because I am considering two tickets to Europe rather than four in the U.S. (Sorry, Maybe I should have explained that more extensively.)How many times have we all called an "authority" for an "official" answer only to call back and get a "different official" answer? That's why I wanted more input. I am further hoping that those who are not able to use their miles due to unfortunate circumstances (perhaps illness) can possibly give their benefit to someone (like friend/family)who can use it to come to them who could possibly otherwise not afford to.

Love ya anyway. Thanks for keeping us on our toes!

To everyone else: Thanks for all the clarification and additional tidbits!

There is a great site just for questions like this - www.flyertalk.com.

RLA Aug 20th, 2003 09:09 AM

Thanks Louise
for reminding me. I knew of this site, but had temporarily forgotten about it.
