Few days on Capri, Italy

Hi Fodorites -
We are adding two evenings on Capri to the end of a walking trip along the Amalfi coast (in September). I have a few questions.....

1. I need to find the closest Ferry point from Furore, Agerola (?) to Capri. Not sure what city/town with a ferry is closest....

2. I would like a recommendation for accommodations that are high end but not the top of luxury. We will be staying in a converted monestary in Agerola and would like to treat ourselves on Capri - but not to a ridiculous level. Also, location should be good because we have such a short time on Capri.

3. We'll depart Capri for Naples on Monday September 24 for a 12:40 p.m. flight out of Naples. My husband thinks this is nuts and puts us at risk for missing the flight. Can we get a high speed boat ride trip out of Capri in the a.m. in time to get the flight? I would hate to have to leave Capri the night before for Naples.

Thank you all so much for sharing the collective wisdom, Susan

Our favorite non luxury hotel on Capri is Hotel-canasta.com
You can take an early hydrofoil from Capri to Naples pier beverello at 6:50 or 8:10 (about 1hr trip) then take the Alibus from the piazza at the port to the airport (about 30 mins). Check up to date hydrofoil schedules.

Hi Susan,

Be aware that the hydrofoils (aliscafi) are subject to ocean conditions. If it's too rough, they don't run.

I bought a ticket for an 8:am hydrofoil that never showed. It was 9:30 am before one arrived at the Capri Marina Grande. In the meantime, I watched other boats and ferries (auto carrying) come and go.....

Hi Susan - The nearest ferry point to Furore would be Amalfi or Positano.

For ferry/hydrofoil timetables to/from Capri see:

http://www.capri.net/salsa/lang/en/page/transport.html

Timetables change throughout the season.

Hope this helps ...

Do I have to book the ferry/hydrofoil in advance (if traveling in September)?

S,

My trip was in Sept too and I just walked up and bought a ticket. Traveling from Positano to Capri by regular boat, you did need an advance reservation due to demand on that route. There are more options to/from Naples.

Buon viaggio!

Stay at Villa La Scale in Anacapri. So beautiful, they treat you so well and it is heavenly. Don't worry about location...you can go back and forth from capri to anacapri so easily. We loved it, it is such a special place.

We spent a couple of nights at La Minerva in Capri in September 2005 and loved it. Although not expensive by Capri standards, it certainly wasn't cheap - I think we spent on the order of &270; per night for a deluxe double with jacuzzi and terrace - beautiful and worth it. A short (10 minute?) walk to the Piazzetta. Our trip report (now dated!) is at: http://tinyurl.com/39qbde

Yes, it is possible that your morning departure for Naples could be a problem.
Our first attempt to visit Capri was cancelled because none of the ferries was running due to rough waters. That was in September. A day or two later when we took a coastal cruise including Capri, the water was fine. But I can think of worse fates than being stuck on Capri for an extra day. As for La Tosca, we stayed there a few years ago and it is definitely not "high end" -- in fact, it is a 1 star. On that trip, had no delayed or cancelled ferries.
