Fethiye, Turkey Questions
We are trying to decide on which town on the Aegean coast to base ourselves for a couple of days. A friend recommended Bodrum but it during my research it seems like it is very touristy. We prefer quaint towns.
Would we be better off in Fethiye? If so, has anyone stayed at Montabello Beach Hotel? Any other recommendations for a nice beach town to spend a couple of days? I think we will have a car so we would appreciate recommendations on sites in the area as well. Cheers! |
Finding a quite place at the Eagen cost may be a challenge. I have not been in every town of course, but wherever we went in September seemed packed. I quite liked Bodrum and Marmaris, and you may give either a try. If you are willling to pay little more try a place called 'Sabrinas Haus' to stay, or check www.nisanyan.net...
Good luck... |
How about Dalyan. Its small and quiter. By the way when are you planning to take your vacation? Period makes difference on the population.

Murat, we are traveling in May/June.
Thanks. |
Just a short 1/2 hour minibus ride away from Bodrum is the very quaint and special seaside village of Gumusluk. I stayed there and in Bodrum both. Gumusluk was wonderful and I'd love to return there one day.

We ended up in Dalyan, by mistake, three years ago. We loved it, wonderful place. One of the 'nicest' places we have ended up at by error.
Lycean tombs and turtles. The locals were exceptionaly hospitable. |
the last time i was there about 10 years ago we found fethiye far more touristy than bodrum....both are tourist based however...
|
Than both Dalyan and Bodrum will be Ok. It will be just the beginning of the season so do not expect a big turist rush at either places.
Dalyan will be still quiter than Bodrum. If you have time and have a car to drive you could do both places. Fethiye ! Beautiful beaches but out of my list. To crowded and the type of tourist they host made me delete the word Fethiye. Have fun in Turkey |
We stayed in Bodrum, Fethiye and Dalyan and liked Bodrum best. Yes, Bodrum was touristy, but we loved the vibe. And when we wanted to get away, we took the bus to Gemusluk, like someone else recommended. Our hotel was across the sidewalk from a small beach, which was good enough for us.
We didnt' love Fethiye, it was just OK. At night it felt a little creepier and we were constantly harrassed by people trying to get us to take their boat trips. And there is no beach in Fethiye. We enjoyed traveling to Oludeniz, but it was very touristy. Nearly everyone was British or German. The sights were stunning, though. Our last stop was Dalyan. We enjoyed the town, but it is away from the water (on a river, a short bus ride from the coast). We were there in June and they apparently have a lot of mosquitos there then. The town was cute and the people were nice. One of the best meals we had was at a restaurant on the river overlooking some Lycian tombs. But in terms of things to do, Bodrum had the most. Have fun!! |
Jeanie, thanks for the comparison of the three cities. We are planning our trip to Turkey and found it helpful. Do you recall the name of the restaurant in Dalyan? It sounds great. Thanks.
|
There's a whole row of restaurants along the river in Dalyan (can't miss it). They're all pretty much the same, really. We just chose one and went with it. I think we just found it peaceful and we loved the fresh grouper. Actually, we loved the food everywhere in Turkey, but I really remember that meal. If it'll help you planning, I put a bunch of my pictures on yahoo photos. I'd be happy to send you the link and you might be able to get a better sense of the places from the photos. Send me an email [email protected] if you're interested, and I'll send you back the link. It kind of scares me to post that link on the internet - I don't really know why. I absolutely loved Turkey and would be happy to help you out if I can.
