There is no direct train between voss and Flam - you take the mainline from Voss to Myrdhal then change to the narrow-gauge mountain train down to Flam - this is a scenic rail route that stops for a look at a huge waterfall enroute - you should be able to buy a thru ticket Voss to Myrdhal - reservations are not required on the Voss to Myrdhal train because you are traveling locally - if going onto Oslo they could be required - never a problem getting on these trains.
For lots on Norway in a Hutshell trains and buses check www.ricksteves.com and www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.seat61.com - each has special sections on this fantastic excursion - one of the most awesome I've been on in decades of European travels.
There are probably buses from Myrdhal to Flam as well but they may not stop by the waterfalls.

You can’t book a bus back to Flam, but you can buy the ferry and the bus ticket as a package (no discount).

If you have booked the ferry already, then buy the bus ticket from the driver.
Timetable for the shuttle bus: http://www.visitflam.com/fjord-tours...bleneroyfjord/
There are regular buses too:

Be aware that “Gudvangen” is the stop at the pier and “Gudvangen E16” is 600 m from the pier at the road E16.

Yes, there is a direct bus back to Flam; however you will need to go out to the main road the E 16 as JJZZ stated, in order to catch it. Cross the road. I believe there is a sign for the bus, but not to worry, if standing there just wave it down. It will NOT be in the large parking area where most NIN buses wait. The website JJZZ gives will give the timetables. Certainly no need to go to Voss. I took the ferry to Gudvangen, bus to Stalheim, bus back to Gudvangen to catch bus back to Flam. Easy.

Thanks for all of the replies....I did find the ferry/bus combo. However -- we are now thinking about two other options. We could take the ferry both ways -- that would take about 4 hours. Alternatively, we will have a rental car and we could take it on the ferry and then drive back to Flam. We will only be in the western fjords for a couple of days. What would folks suggest. Is it worth taking the ferry both ways? Is it lovely to just drive in that area? Thoughts? We are staying in Flam overnight.

You can only take the car in the direction Gudvangen-Flåm on some of the departures. Driving between Flåm and Gudvangen is just tunnels. Choose based on time and economics - I guess you could choose whether to take bus or ferry back when you arrive.
