Ferry to Aran Islands--rough?
We will be in Galway City in September. Is the water rough over to the Aran Islands?. I do not do well at all on rough seas..I have heard it is only a 35 minute ride. But when you are sick , that can seem like an eternity. Just wondering..thanks

It depends on the weather - check the weather before you go.
|
It can be pretty rough - sometimes even in nice weather. But when conditions are really bad they cancel the ferry.

The boat can roll a bit in almost any weather conditions because it is crossing the Atlantic swell (it's travelling on a N-S line when the Atlantic waves are travelling West to East.
I have never noticed a passenger being much troubled by it. |
I thought it was kind of rough when we went. I don't usually get motion sickness, but I'd think that someone who does might feel a bit ill. As you say, it's not a terribly long ride.

There is air service to the Arans that is competetively priced to the ferry. See here :
http://www.galway.net/galwayguide/visit/aran/transport/ BOTH boat and airplane service have an available shuttle service from Galway city. Ferry info: http://www.aerarannislands.ie/ Flight info: http://www.aranislandferries.com/times_mor.php Bob |

Dunno if this helps, or not: We went in June of '08, spending the night before and after at a B&B in Carraroe. Our voyage was Glass smooth, in BOTH directions, but the day BEFORE was stormy and VERY windy (Gale Force 8&9 winds!). At the B7B the night before, we chatted with two gents that had just returned from Inis Mor. They told us that THEIR return voyage was HORRIFIC! :( Bob |
We took a ferry over in July many years ago. Hubby and two sons were fine and enjoyed the trip. It may have been a little bumpy. I am not a good boater/flyer/backseat rider and was in bad form over and back. Only people with motion sickness can appreciate the feeling. Once on land, we rented bikes and had a wonderful day. Have your Dramamine handy, you just never know.
