Ferry stops Amalfi Coast summer: yes in Minori, no in Praiano?
 

We are a family of 4 (2 kids ages 9 and 12). I really want to stay in Positano, but I keep reading about the hordes of tourists, which we all hate. So looking at possibly Praiano or Minori as a backup due to crowds in Positano.

I've read only buses are available in Praiano, no ferry. That correct? I don't want to rely on a bus in June in the AC.

I've found a web site showing summer ferries from Minori to Amalfi. That correct? From Amalfi, of course there are many ferry options.

Don't want Maiori because I've read it's less charming and less pretty.

I really would love Positano, bu can't decide if I should pull the trigger on a villa there, uphill, or look for something in Minori. Would consider Praiano if there was a ferry stop, but I don't think there is.

Can anyone paint a clear picture on tourists in June in Positano? Will I be ok or should I look at Minori? Planning on a week with day stops in Capri (hiking Pizzolungo trail and chair lift Anacapri), Ravello, Pompeii, hike Path of the Gods, and a boat trip of some sort along the coast or around Capri.

We have been to Positano many times in June. Early June is much better than later June, but even so, there are big crowds in town.

The best bet is to stay at a hotel/villa near the top of the town or half way down, so that you can avoid some of the throngs of tourists in town and at the beach.

However, you need to be in decent physical shape to do that. Positano has lots of steps going back and forth.

We often planned our days with an early start for touring/sightseeing, sometimes with a stop at Fornillo Beach, which is 1/2 mile out of town, so away from where the boats and crowds were pulling in.

Then we'd have a leisurely lunch, and head back down to town/beach toward the late afternoon when the crowds were starting to dwindle.

Evenings are not a problem, but dinner reservations are necessary in season for the more popular trattorias/restaurants.

BTW, wherever you stay, get an early start for touring other towns/cities/Capri. Not sure I'd want to base in Praiano or Minori because the buses on the coast are HORRIBLE in the summer months, packed to the rafters. Good luck whatever you decide!

Thanks Weadles. I believe there is a ferry stop in Minori that takes you to Amalfi so you would not have to take the bus. It's on the Travelmar web site.

Even if I stay up high in Positano, I still would have to fight the crowds to reach the ferry and beach correct?

Once again, it depends where you stay. For example, there is a long staircase at the end of VIA PASITEA that takes you directly to Fornillo Beach, so you bypass a lot of the crowds going the other way to town. Not that Fornillo is uncrowded in the summer season, but it's usually way better than the beach in town.

About the ferry: The key, as mentioned, is getting an early start to your day.

Lastly, not sure I'd want to base in Minori. I think it's pretty tiny without much to do, and maybe not that many restaurants? Full disclosure: I've only driven through, so don't know it well. My gut feeling is that Positano or Amalfi are the best and
most convenient bases for getting around the coast.
