ferry service from Sicily to Tunisia
 

Does anyone know if there are ferries going from Sicily to North Africa? If so, has anyone done it?

Jim,<BR> I have a guidebook at home for Sicily and I remember that it has a few pages referencing Tunisia. Since it sounded kind of intriguing to me, although not to any of my other travel partners, I remember reading that it is not a very safe place to go and you have to be careful about the food you eat there. I think it also mentioned a ferry service. I will try and remember to reread the info and get back to you tomorrow.

Yes, there is ferry service between Sicily and Tunisia (think city is Tunis?). Like Angela, I've read about it in guidebooks. Didn't get the sense that Tunisia was an unsafe place -- the country does sit between 2 that most travellers avoid, Libya & Algeria. I thought Tunisia sounds intriguing. Alot of history and excellent Roman ruins.

Not sure where Angela heard about Tunisia not being safe or having to watch the food. I am thinking maybe she is mixing it up with Tangiers in Morocco. I have never seen any bad reports about it. I was in Tunisia right before Christmas and it was fantastic! Much less hassle than say, Morocco, thats for sure (but I still like Morocco).<BR><BR>I am sorry that I cannot help about the ferry, but in case it's an option, flights are pretty cheap from Paris, about $225 USD. No idea from Italy, sorry.

I just checked my LP guide book and it says there is a weekly service between Trapani in Sicily and Tunis. My guidebook is rather old so you may try the LP site and their newsgroup to verify. For what it's worth, my LP says it runs on Mondays at 8 AM from Trapani, takes 8 hours and leaves Tunis the same Monday at 8 PM. Cost was 65 Dinars.
