Ferry/Hydrofoil between Sorrento or Positano and Ischia

Is there a ferry that services these two places? I plan to do a day trip to Ischia next spring.
Thanks

Yes - lots from Sorrento, less from Positano, where they are more seasonal. From Positano can always take the 2-3 hourly buses to Sorrento and then boat to Ischia - which to me compares more than favorably to its neighbor Capri.

Thanks Bob, much appreciated.

Joy/Bob - Actually there's only a hydrofoil service from Sorrento to Ischia, no ferry.

There's one per day each way:
Dep. Sorrento 09.30
Dep. Ischia 17.20

Fare: € 15 each way.

I don't believe there's any direct service from Positano, though there is one from Salerno/Amalfi.

Hope this helps ...

Steve

Thanks Steve. Is the one hydrofoil/day all year round or will there be more service during the early summer months i.e. late May to late June?

Steve,

That's great information about the service from Sorrento - Ischia. Would you happen to know if there is more frequent service from Capri to Ischia?

We will be on Capri the beginning of July for two nights, then Sorrento. Ischia was on our itinerary for a day trip, but not a LONG day trip. There will be four children in tow (ages 5- 12).

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

The other way you can go from Sorrento to Ischia is by way of Naples. Connecting service.

Yes, the Capitan Morgan goes from Capri to Ischia and back quite often each day. Their website isn't very good but here it is.
http://www.capitanmorgan.it/
We used it in July. It will show you three stops on Ischia, Ischia Porto, Casamicchiola (I'm not good on the spelling of that) and Forio. You can get off on any of those spots.

Ischia has buses that go around the island. Otherwise you can go to www.ischiaonline.it and see about car rental. Follow the signs to Sant Angelo. There is also a castle you can visit that kids would love. It's carved out of a huge rock. You can also go to beaches and thermes. Kids can go to ther thermes, also.

Yes, there is boat service between Sorrento and Ischia. There is none from Positano, only to Capri. As Steve said, you would have to either go to Sorrento or Salerno to catch a boat to Ischia.

I was just in Italy less than 2 weeks ago and aside from the ferries/hydrofoils I took, found a nice alternative that I really enjoyed. I went on the Green Mini Cruise for 21 euros for a full day cruise from 9 am - 6:30 pm. It left from Sorrento, making stops at both Procida and Ischia. For an all-day cruise, it was well worth the expense and very enjoyable and informative. You might check with the "Sorrento Info" office in the center of town for some different options available:

Via Tasso, 19
Sorrento
+39 (0)81 8074000

Bear in mind that Ischia is not as touristy as Capri, you should plan on renting a car or hiring a driver to take you around the island if you want to see things. The Italians frequent Sant'Angelo, whereas the Germans stay more in Ischia Porto, Ischia Ponte, etc. It's a beautiful island and a nice change from touristy Capri.

Hi

This site might be of value as well - http://www.capri.net/salsa/lang/en/page/transport.html.

Ciao

Wow, thanks guys for all the information!!!

Huitres, do you get a chance to get off the cruise boat while you are in Ischia? That cruise sounds interesting. I might have to look at that alternative.

This could be the Green cruise Huitres is recommending - http://www.marineclub.it/frame-ita.html

I know Ischia very well because my family is there. I only say this because the website that Worldinabag gave you is a really good idea. When I'm in Sant Angelo these boats come in and people get off to enjoy the village. I noticed they also go into Ischia Ponte instead of Ischia Porto. Ischia Ponte is another great village where the castle is. All easily walkable. It also stops in Procida. I would say if you're traveling with the family to take advantage of this boat trip. Bring your bathing suits because if the kids don't want to wander the village they can go to the beach right in the village. (that would be Sant Angelo and possibly Ischia Ponte) No cars needed, no drivers and not buses to bother with.

Joy - I've just been down to check re services from Positano (- I'm staying there this week).

It seems there is a once daily service in high season only (June-mid Sept) from Positano via Capri.
Fare is € 17 each way.

Hope this helps ...

Steve
