Ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki
Has anyone taken the overnight ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki? Did you spend the night in Helsinki or take the ferry back the next night?
Is it worth the time/money to spend a day in Helsinki? Thanks! |
Hi jk,
Helsinki is a lovely city. As to whether it is worth the time and money is entirely your call. |
If you don't care to overnight in Helsinki and don't want to stay there all day and wait for the night boat, you can train to Turku, seeing a bit of Finland and another town and take the night boat from there! boats usually depart Turku nightly about 9pm.

Sailing out of Stockholm, Sweden to Turku, Finland through the archipelago is one of the most beautiful things I've done. I did it in June so the sun barely set. After four hours of twilight the sun came up again. Early in the morning I saw more of the archipelago before arriving in Turku.
Helsinki is worth more than a day. I spent 3. If I were going to take the cruise for the archipelago view I'd take the shorter one to/from Turku. Turku is a pleasant city with stuff along the water front to do including a blocky old fortress that's now a museum. There are ships along the water to tour, a "Pioneer Village" and a modern art/archeology museum. The art museum on the hill should be open after its renovation. I think you'd get a better feel for Finland with a single longer day in Turku rather than a shorter one in Helsinki. Most everyone in Finland spoke English and FYI Finland uses the euro. Of course a lot of this depends upon the ferry schedules and what time of year you'll be there. |
The ferry is also a great experience. Have dinner and party with the locals. |
If partying with the locals is anything like it was when we did this trip a lonnnng time ago you'll need a night in Helsinki to recover -:)

The ferry is an enjoyable trip through the Archipelago. We enjoyed the day in Helsinki and took the ferry back to Stockholm. In Helsinki, we took a tour of the sites that can be set up on the ship.
