Ferris Wheel in Tuileries?

Is this up year-round or just during certain months? We walked through the Tuileries last May and don't recall seeing it at all.

kerouac Feb 10th, 2008 08:40 AM

It is not there now.

StCirq Feb 10th, 2008 08:42 AM

I honestly don't know if it's up right now, but it was up last summer, because my daughter took a picture of it in July.

It was built for the Millennium celebrations and was supposed to be up for a year, but it's been dismantled and reassembled at least a couple of times since then, and the owners keep applying for temporary permits.

The Tour Eiffel was supposed to be dismantled after the Expo it was originally built for, too. I think La Grande Roue may become a permanent fixture in Paris as well.

Deja_Sue Feb 10th, 2008 08:47 AM

Ah, thank you. Good to know we weren't crazy...we keep seeing online pictures of it right where we were walking, but it definitely wasn't up when we visited.

Don't bet on anything for the moment -- municipal elections in exactly one month.

Everything starts all over again from that point.

I am one of the Parisians who considers that thing to be an eyesore. If ever it becomes permanent, it will most certainly not be in that location. The Bercy area is often mentioned as a possible place for a permanent installation.

StCirq Feb 10th, 2008 08:54 AM

FWIW I think it's en eyesore, too. And in summer it just causes incredible pedestrian congestion in the Place de la Concorde.

Pinchme_iam_dreaming Feb 10th, 2008 09:05 AM

We took a ride on it last sept. Such a beautiful viwe of Paris.. We were hoping it would be there this Sept?

MrNuke Feb 10th, 2008 09:11 AM

Deja_Sue,
Similar to you experience I was in Paris for six weeks last summer from May to Mid-June and it wasn't up.

TPAYT Feb 10th, 2008 09:12 AM

It was there in Sept.'07 in all it's glory.

Pinchme_iam_dreaming Feb 10th, 2008 09:22 AM

We were in Paris from sept 18-24 2007. We had our ride Saturday Sept 23 night, It was great.

Underhill Feb 10th, 2008 10:38 AM

During part of the summer until early September there is usually a fair in the Tuileries gardens, with all sorts of rides and other activities. Lots of fun.

ellene Feb 11th, 2008 09:40 PM

I was on in 4 weeks ago, cant believe they took it down.

I think it is the best view in all of paris, but then I am an easy mark.

hmmm Feb 12th, 2008 01:07 AM

We rode it before the millenium celebration, and, the view toward the arc was quite memorable.

Paris already has 3 major eyesores, Tour Montparnasse, Arche de La Defense and the Eiffel Tower.

It doesn't need a stinking Ferris Wheel.

Are some things innately unattractive, or is beauty really determined by the beholder?...just wondering...

The point is that carnival rides don't belong in the middle of a beautiful city.

kerouac Feb 12th, 2008 11:38 AM

I might reconsider if they built a beautiful Ferris wheel in Jules Verne Captain Nemo style or something like that. But not that flashy blinking thing.

ira Feb 12th, 2008 12:17 PM

HI D,

>Are some things innately unattractive, or is beauty really determined by the beholder?..

As an engineer, I appreciate the elegance and beauty of the London Eye.

As a visitor to London, I find it an eyesore.
