Wasn't there early this year in Feb but I'll be there next month and will check for you!

We were there last month - there's a large ferris wheel - it's situated very near the Louvre.

sandi_travelnut Sep 10th, 2005 07:03 PM

it was there in December, by the place de concorde and the obelisk

francophile03 Sep 10th, 2005 07:05 PM

The ferris wheel was there last December/January.

Thanks for the info....we're keeping our fingers crossed that it will be shining brightly at the end of October!!

Jody what dates will you be in Paris?

Scarlett Sep 10th, 2005 07:57 PM

jody, which hotel this time? :)

It was alive and circulating on the 17th July. It's in the Tuileries between the Louvre and place de la Concorde.

No ferries wheel at the Place de la Concorde on September 2nd. The place looks much better without it

There seems to be some confusion here.

There is a small carnival of sorts that operates twice a year on the north side of the Tuileries gardens. It features a midway with rides, games, and food. The ferris wheel you saw recently by the Louvre was part of this twice-yearly event.

There was also a large ferris wheel directly on the place de la Concorde for several years around 2000 to celebrate the millennium. The owner managed to wrangle an extension on the contract several times, allowing the ferris wheel (an enormous cash cow for the owner) to remain in place as a municipal eyesore far longer than intended, greatly overstaying its welcome. The city finally forced the ferris wheel off the place de la Concorde with legal actions and fines. It reappeared again early this year, like a recurring nightmare, but fortunately it is gone again now.

The ferris wheel you saw over the summer, then, was the ferris wheel of the summer carnival, not the monstrosity of the millennium.

"monstrosity of the millennium."

AGREED! It was so totally out of place .

Anthony....many thanks for clearing up all the confusion!!

walkinaround Sep 11th, 2005 01:35 PM

"monstrosity of the millennium."

agreed. london eye it is not.

Since it's the consensus that the BIG Ferris wheel is gone..why don't you try the Eutelstat Hot Air Balloon ..it's tethered so you won't fly away.. at Parc Andre Citroen. The views of Paris are supposed to be great.

"monstrosity of the millennium" perhaps...however it was quite a ride! My friend and I were told about it by an American we bumped into in the elavator of the Eiffel Tower. It was the last night and free. I fear ferris wheels but had to do it. So glad I did!

FYI, the Millennium ferris wheel, which was situated on Place Concorde, was featured in the movie "Something About Charlie." The movie starred Marky Mark and was a remake of the Audrey Hepburn/Cary Grant hit "Masquerade."

I can remember walking past the ferris wheel back in June of 1999.

One year we were in Paris the week after Christmas and they had rides set up. Since it was right before New Year's it didn't seem too out of place.

Was there 3 weeks ago and much to my disappointment its gone!!
