Feminine Necessities

My boyfriend and I will be hiking in Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary during October. Will it be easy to buy feminine hygiene products and condoms in some of the more rural areas of these nations?

hmmm Aug 29th, 2002 07:23 AM

I would think that as long as there are women living in these areas, these products will be sold. Otherwise, try to pack as much with you as possible.

If it was me, I would bring my own. At least that way you know that you will have what you are used to. Brands are muy importante when it comes to tampons and condoms. Good luck!

First rule in travel: Never assume you are going to find the same things abroad. Buy what you need before you go, less of a hassle. Plus do you really want to learn the Romanian name for tampons and condoms?

European Aug 29th, 2002 09:54 AM

Well, Tampax is Tampax everywhere. And Ob is Ob. Most tampons are same worldwide. But the availability could be different in countryside Romania than in Budapest (where you certainly get everything). But if I were you I would still carry my own, at least for initial need.

Unless you want to find yourself in a situation I was about 20 years ago in countryside Greece. Tampons were sold only in pharmacies, and the person there spoke only Greek. Well, so I had to play a little pantomine. In a way she understood: she went to the backroom, and came back with a vibrator.

Duke, LOL! Unfortunately I was a poor student, and needed all my money to buy "feminine hygiene products".

Besides, it's so much fun reading the directions and warnings for toxic shock syndrome in the local language.

Do learn the Bulgarian, Romania, and Hungarian words for tampon, pad, condom, etc. I speak from difficult experience.

FYI, Tampax aren't sold in Germany. If you want tampons with applicators, you should bring your own just in case.

if you need an applicator email me!

Condom in Portuguese is called "camisa de Venus", translating exactly to "the shirt of Venus". Isn't it romantic?

No other language has a equivalent formulation.

Pedro
Oh I thought it was the Rag of Venus......
