Anyone familiar with Feltwell, England in Norfolk County?

Am I right in assuming you're about to be assigned to Lakenheath?

The English, by the way, is Norfolk. Not Norfolkshire, not Norfolk County, but just plain Norfolk.

I'm reasonably familar with Brandon, a couple of miles away, where we regularly stop for (frankly, indifferent) fish and chips on the interminable drive to see chums on the North Norfolk coast. The chip shop seems to be the most interesting thing about the town. Nearby Thetford Forest is pleasant enough, as long as you understand that "forest" in English doesn't mean "dense woodland", but "area where dense woodland is kept under sufficient control you can comfortably hunt deer" .

For some reason, most ancient inhabitants of the area kept on dumping large amounts of bullion then ran away or got killed. Whatever the explanation, the Treasures dug up at Thetford, Mildenhall and Hoxne are all now in the British Museum.

But the area's very handy for exploring Norfolk and Cambridgeshire, which are unjustly undervisited. If you just want things to see, try posting a separate question about things to see in these two counties, as there are a couple of East Anglians who post regularly and love giving suggestions about what to see and do.

You'll be well-placed for numerous days out - Cambridge, Norwich, Ely & Bury St Edmunds are all worth a trip. Getting up to the north Norfolk coast gives you lots of open coast for long walks or (weather permitting) decent beaches.

Norfolk and Suffolk are very much neglected by tourists from abroad, although the North Norfolk coast is now nicknamed Chelsea on Sea and is very popular with second-home owners.
Thetford Forest is part of the Brecklands, and is mainly coniferous planting.

hi_kity: As you can see, there is a LOT of Fodorite knowledge about Feltwell (or just about any town in the UK) - so asking "anyone familiar with . . . ?" is awfully broad (or narrow depending on how you look at it).

What exactly do you want to know about Feltwell? Are you moving there? Visiting? Want to know what to see in the area? Or recomendations re where to live? How to get there from London?

Maybe it's my restricted social life. But everyone I know in Burnhamshire either lives in Islington (roughly as handy for the coast as Chelsea is for Gloucestershire), or is a Coastette: a North Norfolk (often trustafarian)resident with a Chelsea income and Essex fashion sense.

Indeed I've bumped into more Islington neighbours at church in one or other of the Burnhams than you'd ever find back home. What's the mark of serious deviance along Upper Street suddenly becomes socially OK in a country church with medieval paintings and decent hymns.

Aldeburgh and Southwold (also Walberswick) have attracted Londoners buying second homes for many, many years. The North Norfolk coast, particularly around Burnham Market, has become popular in that respect more recently.

I have lived in Aldeburgh, my daughter was schooled in Southwold (St Felix) and I enjoy visiting the North Norfolk coast. Oh, hi-kity, I currently live about 20 miles from Feltwell, so if you have any questions, fire away.
