Feedback on 10-day Bavaria itinerary - Sept 2010

Hello Fodorites! I hope you are all enjoying the holidays!

My husband and I are planning a 10-day trip to Bavaria in Sept 2010, and with the help of many of you, we've put together our itinerary and are ready to start booking lodging. I hoped a few of you could troubleshoot our intinerary one last time. Much appreciated!

Day 1: Depart from Kansas City
Day 2: Arrive Munich, leisurely explore city (recoup from jet lag). Spend night in Munich.
Day 3: Day trip to Dachau. More Munich sightseeing.
Day 4: Train to Salzburg. Salzburg sightseeing. Spend night in Salzburg.
Day 5: Explore more of Salzburg (considering day trip to Mondsee, St. Wolfgang or St. Gilgen). Spend night in Salzburg.
Day 6: Train to Hallstatt. Explore Hallstatt and spend the night there.
Day 7: More Hallstatt sightseeing. Second overnight in Hallstatt.
Day 8: Train to Mittenwald. Sightseeing and overnight in Mittenwald.
Day 9: Train to Neuschwanstein, tour castle, then train to Munich. Overnight in Munich.
Day 10: Last day to explore Munich.
Day 11: auf Wiedersehen!!!

St. Wolfgang and St. Gilgen are both on the way to Hallstatt. It would probably make more sense to stop there along the way or daytrip there from Hallstatt. If you are looking for a daytrip option from Salzburg, I highly recommend Berchtesgaden. The town itself is pretty and in a stunning location. From there you could catch a bus (unless you are driving) to the Konigssee, a breathtakingly pristine and beautiful lake nestled in between some pretty dramatic mountains.

Overall the itinerary looks really good!

jbjayhawk, There is a very picturesque route from Fussen, after you see the Neuschwanstein. It goes from Fussen via Zugspitz, the tallest peak in Germany, to Garmisch Partenkirchen. From here you can go to Innsbruck/ Munich or Salzburg.
I have a detailed itinerary, which I can share, if you are interested. Do let me know.
It gives you the true essence of bavaria.
You can also visit the stunningly beautiful Obersalzburg- Hitlers summer residence, Berchtesgaden-the Eagles nest.
lot of history and scenery.

Hi Paragkash,
Just reading this thread and was wondering if you could provide your detailed itinerary. I too am planning a 12 day bavarian trip with family of 5 next summer 2012

MonicaB:

You'll want to read up on the "Bayern Ticket" daypass. It's perfect for getting around Bavaria with 5 people, and it's good for reaching Salzburg too:

Here's a sketch of the many train lines in Bavaria (thick blue lines are rivers.)

Monica - You might want to start a new thread rather than piggybacking on this old one. I think you'll get a better response that way.
