Where in Southern Italy?--it's a big place. In Naples it will be warmish days, chilly nights, good possibility for rain, maybe some wind. Would I stay home because of bad weather? No. The days will be plenty warm enough to do most anything you want.

As to hotel, we need to know a city and what your budget/desires are, before we can recommend a particular hotel.

The second week of february almond trees are in bloom also in Trieste in northeast Italy, but i don't think it's sign you can go swimming....
Nevertheless the days will be warm enough to enjoy the country

We had a great time during Carnevale in Sicily during February. The children have parades in costume, the weather is mild, and one town, (can't remember the name right off) had a great parade with floats going down the streets - everyone just parted the crowd on the street and it came through. We were busy spraying silly string at good-natured strangers, and throwing confetti at everyone (you buy bags from vendors - a huge party.

Naples I think though is definitely chilly. I lived there and remember being cold. It never snowed except on Mt. Vesuvius.
