on American Air came in $509 (total) for mid December. I know those rates were good through March.

Wow...I'm amazed at how much prices have increased. I booked an unplanned trip to Paris for Feb. 2005 (I bought the tixs sometime in Jan.) and the total cost was around $350 RT from San Diego to CDG. We had some on and off drizzle/rain while we were there, but a day or two after we left, it snowed. BUT, it was PARIS and we didn't care a bit!!!

It's true that fares are higher than they were 3-5 years ago. But are you sure that $350 r/t fare was before taxes? That would make the base fare around $200 r/t from the West Coast which is quite an amazing fare.

My base fare was $370 -- 509 after taxes and fuel surcharges, and fuel surcharges have been insanely high for the past 16 months.
