The Metro is a great value and wonderful convenience. As everywhere, you need to be aware of what is going on around you, but I wouldn't have qualms for one minute about using the Metro. My only wish is that we had something like this in Southern California!

You mean you weren't one of the 70,000 people who rode the Gold Line yesterday.
Yes it's 35 years late, and certainly not close to being in the league of the Paris Metro, but at least it's something. And don't forget that San Diego Trolley. That's not bad, either.

My family and I just returned from Paris where we used the Metro several times each day. We were there with our 2 children and felt perfectly safe. As always, anywhere in a crowd, we were alert to our surroundings and had our money safely tucked away. We encountered no difficulties at all and were amused by a small band that went from car to car playing their instruments.

I have lived in NYC for 22 years and am fairly fearless about public transportation, but I always am extra cautious on the Paris Metro. I do not carry a wallet and I am always aware of my surroundings as twice I was the target of pickpockets. Once was when a group of young men suddenly swarmed me as I entered a subway car and locals actually stared yelling at them, the other time was in a lonely tunnel connecting two subway lines when a young man decided that I was his best friend and was quite upleasant verbally when I kept him away from me. Now that I've told my experiences I would still not hesitate to use the Metro, just be very aware of your surroundings.
