fear of driving in rome!
 

I am driving a rental car from Orvieto, Italy and am thinking of dropping the car off at CORSO FRANCIA in the very north of Rome. It looks like a straight shot down a road from outside of Rome - via Flammina Nuova and seems simple enough.

Anyone driven this route?

Is the drop-off place within Rome's ban on private vehicles zones - probably but be sure.

Why not return the car in Orvieto and take regional trains at dirt-cheap fares into the center of Rome? could be cheaper and faster than driving - figuring in car rental day, gas and steep tolls if taking autoroutes.

Can't return it in Orvieto because it looks like that is where the car is being picked up. So why not just take the train to Rome?

But it you have to drive doubt if CF Won't be in a TLzone. Also you can get to Termini in Rome fairly easily for a drop off without any TLZs.

But you question is not making a lot of sense.

Is Orvieto your last overnight of a driving tour and you are just driving from Orvieto to Rome and not stopping over anywhere en route? If so, why drive -- drop the car and take the train.

Don't know why you don't take the train either.

However answering your post is no, you should not fear driving in Rome. It used to be chaotic 20 years ago or more, but it is quite ok now. You will just want to have an extra pair of eyes to check the Vespas and other motorcycles, but that is until you realize their drivers also have eyes.

So, not confortable, but nothing to fear.

The Corso di Francia is well north of any ZTL in Rome, and there should be no problem driving to that road coming from the north. I don't know where the rental agency is, but no part of the road goes near the chaotic center of Rome.

I suppose you do have a reason for driving, and I can think of several very nice stopovers you could make on the way.

The rental car companies on Corso di Francia are fairly easy to find and access by car, especially if you have an updated GPS. Most folks on this board are frightened of ZTL, so you're not going to find many users willing to drive into Rome.
