There is more than one way to get to Positano from Rome, and my article gives you a review of some of the better options, using inexpensive public transportation all the way (rather than private limosines).
Bob the Navigator is right about the FCO/Termini leg; a limosine won't cost that much more than FOUR airporter train tickets to Termini. One or two persons will find the train cheaper.
From Rome to Salerno, a limosine is prohibitively expensive for most travellers. Fortunately, the train is modern, cheap, fast and usually punctual.
The ferry crossing from Salerno to Positano is very scenic and much faster than taking the SITA bus with a change in Amalfi. When the ferry is not operating because of bad weather, the bus is almost always available.

How manageable is it to drive from Southwest Rome to Positano? How's parking, generally? Are we crazy to rent a car, or would the train be best mode of transportation and then rent a car in Positano?

Hi Rita,
If you are going in season, a car is more of a hindrance than a help in Positano. There is very limited parking on the ACand the coast road gets clogged by tour buses.
You can get driving directions from Rome to Positano at www.viamichelin.com and www.mappy.com.

GAC, you are such a fount of knowledge ! What would be your recommendation for 2 people going from Naples airport to Positano (and not wanting to spend E100 for a limo !) ? We will be travelling on from Positano by boat, if that makes a difference. In June.

A car was definately not a hinderance to us,we had it for three days and managed to explore the area with ease.Parking was not a real problem and if you are in an isolated spot such as Praiano then I would definately recommend it.The traffic was OK and the buses give way to let you pass. On the two days that we used packed buses we wished we still had the car.
