Posted wrong - meant to say Italo also departs Tiburtina (Italo only uses Tiburtina and Ostiense in Rome - very few Ostiense connections).

thanks Ann...staying in Rome gets us in too late to enjoy Rome and the next morning train won't get me to Amalfi until the afternoon.

That's the thought behind trying to get closer to AC. >>

Masterphil - I appreciate what you're trying to do, but sometimes we just have to accept that the simplest solution is the best, even if it means you lose 1/2 a day.

I would much prefer to simply get the train into Termini, check into my hotel, go out and have supper [i should think that you could probably find something decent to eat after 9pm in Rome] and have a decent night's sleep. if you really want to, you can get up early and catch one of the trains that ky is talking about.

it's when we are stressed and tired that problems with thieves, getting on the wrong train, and other problems are most likely to happen.

and if you are travelling through the night, how are you going to enjoy your first morning in the AC ? your hotel room will not be ready, you'll be tired, and you may lose half a day anyway.

I believe we will be wide awake!

We take off at 7pm from the west coast and land in Frankfurt around 3pm..(hopefully we will have gotten great sleep on the plane).

Into Rome at 6:15pm. It should feel like morning to us.

Not sure we will make the train to Salerno, but we are going to give it a shot!

"The Amazing Race!!!" haha

Thank you all for your help as usual!!!

What a great resource!

I have read through all the thread, but I don't think I saw a suggestion to get a train from Termini to Napoli, then stay put for the night there.

There are plenty of fast trains that will get you to Naples. Sure the train station area isn't heaven, but IMO, the train station in Salerno isn't really better, especially at night. Just exit the station and get a taxi to your hotel.

Early in the morning have a driver to Amalfi. You could get a ferry, too. The drive is maybe 90 minutes.

Just another suggestion.

Thanks Tuscan... I did notice that there is a later train to Naples. Gets into Naples at 11pm and I was inquiring what it would be like to be coming out of Naples Station at 11pm at night with luggage.

I grew up in Manhattan so have street smarts.... (In other words, I know it's not good to be outside any train station at 11pm at night with luggage or without luggage for that matter!)

I have a feeling I will make the train to Salerno.

At 7pm at night, is the train, taxi or driver the quickest way to get to Roma Termini? I think if I can get to the 7:34 train at FCO, I should be golden. If not, it's probably stay near Roma Termini and hopefully wake up with jetlag to jump on the train to Salerno.

The fun of planning!!!! :)

i hope that you have better luck at sleeping on planes than I do - i find it almost impossible to sleep in long-haul flights so i'm fit for nothing for the first 24 hours or so on arrival.

how's your italian? How much experience do you have of italian railway stations? I may be teaching my grandma to suck eggs, but before our recent visit to Naples, the locals were telling us to take care of our belongings, especially at or near the station. no way would I like to be there at 11pm.

Depending on how many of you there are, I think that I would arrange a driver from the airport to my Rome hotel, thus avoiding Termini at night as well, but you will have gathered anyway that I'm not over-keen on your plan of trying to get to Salerno on your first night.

You may be getting the idea that I'm risk averse when travelling - actually far from it, but I don't believe in inviting trouble.

Annhig...

I appreciate your candor...

What you propose makes perfect sense!

Any logical human being would follow your plan.

I on the other hand.... haha

I have ruled out Naples.

It's Salerno or bust! If I cannot catch the train that night, we waste the next morning on a train.

Thank you for all of your thoughts!

Probably the train unless you just missed one by a couple of minutes. If you think your timing will work, I would buy my Rome/Salerno ticket when buying the Leonardo ticket. Even though the Leonardo arrives at track #24 now and not the satellite track, you can still have a trek to get to your next train depending on departure track. If you board the Leonardo behind the engine then you should be at the head of the tracks when it pulls into Termini which would be more convenient. Ticket machines and offices are by the front of Termini (shops in between the trains the the ticket location). The few ticket machines I've seen trackside were the old style which might be hard for you to use.

If you look at the map, the ticket offices in Termini are in purple and the machines are in front of that (between Vodaphone and Borri books). The station is also under construction with the tracks all being pushed back (shown on map).

I do not understand your notion that being on the train getting to where you want to be is a "waste."

Molte grazie, annhig!

It doesn't hurt to try!

Stay tuned to my. trip report to see what happened! :)

kybourbon...Thanks! If we get to Salerno that night, I will order a mint julep in your honor!

Dukie...having breakfast overlooking the sea or sitting on a train?! Worth the effort!
