FCO hotel for late arrival?
 

I need suggestions for a hotel at FCO for the night of Dec. 19.

I will arrive -- if on time -- at 9:55pm from LHR. The next day I will head to Assisi (by bus or train, TBD) for a couple of nights before returning to Rome for several days.

Suggestions for a hotel at FCO with airport transport and 24h desk? Assume the flight will be late. I just need a hassle-free place to sleep for the night before moving on.

The Airport Hilton is directly attached to Terminal 3 at the airport. I've stayed at other airport hotels, but none that stands out from the crowd. Most have airport transport, but it's almost never free. I think all have a 24-hour desk.

If you take a bus to Assisi, there's one that leaves from the airport at 9 AM (Monday-Saturday, except holidays) (or 12:30 every day). It takes a little over 4 hours to get to Assisi.

If you take the train, it would be better to stay in central Rome, near Termini station. That's where the trains to Assisi depart. There's a direct train to Assisi at 7:58, arriving at 10:07. There are also later trains, but they usually require that you change trains, usually at Foligno.

There are many hotels near the station, and all the major hotels have 24-hour desks. You can get a taxi from the airport to anywhere in central Rome for €48 fixed fare; a private service doesn't usually cost much more. www.romeshuttlelimousine.com and www.romecabs.com are both reliable. They will give you a quote, which they will adhere to, and you pay when you arrive at destination. They'll meet you in the arrival terminal.

I would prefer the train, myself. For a while I was taking a bus to Rome from my home in Le Marche, east of Assisi. The trip over the mountains always provoked a bit of motion sickness, and four hours on a bus is not a lot of fun.

Why not just take the train/bus to Termini? You'll have more choice in hotels.

I should have mentioned public transportation. I sort of assumed that someone arriving late at night in a strange city would be more comfortable with door-to-door transportation.

In any case, if you're interested, you'd want the Leonardo Express train (not the FL1), and the last train departs at 11:23.

I sure would, I just wouldn't want to deal with trains, buses, etc at 10:30 pm at night after a flight.

There are some hotels with free airport shuttles, the Hilton Garden Inn, for example, which is only about 2 km away and is a bit cheaper than the Hilton at the airport.

Yes, I don't want to deal with trains in an unfamiliar city by myself late at night -- hence I often use airport hotels when I have a late arrival, and start fresh in the new city next day.

The information on the shuttle service that HGI uses is very helpful. May be time to burn a few HHonors points.

bvlenci -- yes, I discovered the bus from FCO to Assisi whilst researching. I am inclined to take the bus to Assisi, and then return to Rome by train two days later, to begin my six night stay there.

I need to find out whether the bus requires a reservation or advance purchase of tickets.

One month and three days until I arrive in Italy!

The large Hilton FCO Hotel is right at the airport. I would stay there.

The web page of the bus service says that you can buy tickets on board the bus. I can almost guarantee that the bus won't be full!

Their web page also says that the buses are just outside Terminal 3 (International arrivals). Leave the terminal by exit 5 or 6, and there will be some bus bays along the sidewalk to your right. They say their buses use stalls 1-4 (probably shared with other bus companies).

I've stayed at the Hilton at FCO airport. It would have been simpler to pre-arrange for a car service to take me into Rome itsel.

It was an annoyingly long walk, dragging roller luggage, from the terminal where I landed to the Hilton. The hotel itself is no great treat.

If your next destination in Italy is easier to reach by sleeping near FCO airport, then by all means book an airport hotel.

But if your next destination is simpler to reach from a train station in the center of Rome, then arrange for a car service to take you a Roman hotel with a 24hour desk. It will save you time.

As it turns out, I was able to change my flight for one that arrives in nid-afternoon, so problem solved: I will simply take the train to Termini. I've booked a hotel by Termini (La Casa di Amy) for the night, and will take a train the next morning to Assisi.
