FCO customs
 

We'll be traveling from the US to London. After 3 days there, we go to Rome, then by train to Florence. How much time do I need to allow to clear customs at FCO if we are coming from the UK? Is it quicker once you have entered a European Union country? We arrive at FCO at 5:40 pm and there are trains from Termini at 7:30, 8:30 & 9:45. I'd like to book the 8:30 but don't want to cut it too close.

8:30 should be plenty of time. You will not go through immigrations -- it is domestic flight from London. The L Express is 30 min but a long walk to the main station so allow an hour in case you have to wait for the train.

It is <b>not</b> &quot;domestic&quot; flight from the UK because the UK is not part of Schengen. So, you do need to go through immigration, pick up bags, and then customs (which for most people mean walking out the &quot;green&quot; doors).

But I agree that 8:30 should be fine.

We have not done the London to Rome leg BUT from Rome to London and Madrid to London were both consider domestic leaving from the domestic terminal and no customs or immigrations in London so assume the reverse would be true. I could be in error, Sorry about that.

Flying from Italy or Spain to the UK, you certainly had to go through UK immigration/customs upon arrivals.

I was going to pipe in here, but I was not sure since you were going from a EU country to an EU country if you would have to go thru the same immigration as coming from the U.S.

I know when we arrived in Rome from the U.S., the EU line was about 5 minutes long, but the &quot;all other&quot; line took us an hour or so to get thru. But we were coming directly from the U.S.

Having said that, I would think you could easily make the 8:30 train. ((b))

Arriving Italy, there are separate lines for EU citizens and non-EU citizens. If you are using a US passport, you're going to the non-EU line. Does not matter where you come from.
