Favourite place in France?

Ok - I'll be first. My favorite destination is the ridge between the Lot and the Dordogne river valleys. Stay in the countryside in a comfortable Gite with all of the sites within a 40 minute drive in any direction. In fact, if the volcano doesn't smoke too much, I am going back again this fall (and I can't wait). Why? Because it is so beautiful around there - and all of it is steeped in history...and they all speak French (and tolerate my efforts at it). I don't think any place of historical standing calls to me quite so strongly. It is like living in a novel or better.

JoeCal this is really weird. I would also like to return to the Lot. The scenery is spectacular. We stayed in a gorgeous Gite in Albas. The reason I say weird is that isn't a region that is mentioned very often on Fodor's. I doubt we'll get back there though as there are still too many other undiscovered (for us) parts of France.

Now ain't that something. I too stayed Albas on the Lot. For me it was B&B, La Carrire. It was the favorite place on our 2006 trip. We're leaving next week for France and beyond and will be near the Lot, but want to explore new places.

dgassa I remember when you and I worked out that we had both stayed at La Carriere - lovely village and great hostess. We are in the same position - would love to return, but there are too many other areas we haven't seen. Hope you have a great trip!

We have many favourite places in France, but there is one place where we have been about 20 times and where we will be again next September: the Esterel coast - stunning scenery, perfect climate, lots of opportunities for swimming, hiking and sightseeing. Did I mention food?

Cathies and dgassa - Isn't it wonderful that you can go back and face the dilema of whether to return to the old places or go fnd new ones? I think so. I am trying to do both this year - back to the Lot/Dordogne area and also down to Langeudoc and Provence (even a week in Germany). Some old and some new. Maybe I'll find a new favorite or simply reinforce the selection I made for this post. I can't wait to find out (4 more months).

Eze-----we have visited there several times and found it charming. Now if we win the lottery there are several lovely hotels that we would love to stay in for a while.
2nd choice,Villefranche-sur-mer. More reasonable in price.
3rd choice, Tourettes-sur-loop. Beautiful location in the hills.

Nice. Love to base here and then drive around surrounding areas -- east to Menton (and all the towns in-between) and up into the hills a little west -- Grasse, St. Paul de Vence, etc. Going back as soon as I can . . .
And if you go to Nice, visit the restaurant Bienvenue in the old town. One of my fave restaurants in the world!

It's in Maussane-les-Alpilles. If you drive in from the east on the D17, there's a sign on your right just before you hit the little traffic circle at the entrance to town. You make a right there onto a little country lane, then the next right, and follow it for a mile or so, and you'll see signs.
