I'm addicted to British pub grub, and in particular, Ploughman's Lunches!

It's one of the few remaining eating-out bargains left in Europe

Well Martin..I didn't find another post, just another instance of me loosing my mind...again (: Anyway, it's still fish and chips with a TON of malt vinegar.

Right there with you, crefloors...I'd kill for it right now!

Definitely fish and chips with mushy peas on the side.

That said, my wife like the beef and ale pies, but is perplexed as to how they end up with such a high dome and flaky crust... Anybody know the answer???

Steak and kidney pie... BUT only if it has a proper crust, i.e. shortcrust or - ideally - suetcrust. Too many places these days just serve up what's basically a beef hotput in an individual dish with a (probably bought-in, frozen) puff pastry lid on top - as complete waste of time IMO.

Truth is that less and less pubs serve what Americans may view as traditional pub grub - you're just as likely to find a green thai curry or tomato salad with basalmic vinegar as you are a ploughmans or scotch egg

Definately not fish and chips, as these are only done properly in a fish and chip shop. In a pub, the fish and the chips are likely to come out of the freezer.

A pie of any description is generally a safe bet if you're not sure of the pub's culinary reputation.

gb944 - that's just flakey (aka puff) pastry. You're obviously not a chef LOL! I agree with Caroline - short crust is the only way to go for proper pies.
