favorite Venetian island?
Say a person didn't have time to visit all of the Venetian islands (Murano, Burano, etc..)- Which one would you recommend that they see?
My favorite was Burano...charming "main drag" with several cafes, little shops, you can wander along the waterfront, and I must have taken 20 pictures of the beautifully colored buildings.
Thanks. I had a couple people say Torcello on another thread. Any other opinions?
I liked Burano much more than Torcello.
I have been to most of the islands and I prefer Burano as well. Torcello is nice but Burano is so very unique that it is well worth the trip over.
Torcello is, at a guess, 10 minutes away from Burano. The main vaporetto goes as far as Burano, where one transfers to a smaller boat.

Torcello has an old church, a small house, three or four restaurants and that's it. It's charm rather escaped me, unless the charm is supposed to be the fact that there is nothing there unlike the other islands. It IS a get-away from the crowds. And we had a great meal there.
Burano has become SO crowded with tourists and dozens of tacky lace shops and stands in the street it looks like a lineup on the docks of cruise ships. But if you can somehow ignore all that, the architecture and little canals are quaint and very picturesque. And when all is said and done, I hate to admit it, but I rather like Murano, which really has a lot of residents and despite all the glass shops seems more of a "real" village than even Burano. |
