Favorite Route From Breiddalsvik to Egilsstadir

In East Iceland you can drive west on a mountain road (Rte 1) or east along the fjord-side route (Rtes 92 and 96) to get from Breiddalsvik to Egilsstadir. Any opinions on the best route to take? Would be there next September.
